HPX500 and SmallHD

Anything professional is outputting HDSDI. I guess they could offer a mod like Panasonic did for the early version of the BTLH80 - about $250. Now it is included in the base unit. Everyone wanted it.

HD-SDI is a very limited and expensive technology. There is only 1 controller manufacturer producing HD-SDI enabled controllers outside of companies building/specifying their own (Panasonic, Marshall, Sony). There are lots of monitors out there that currently have HD-SDI on them.

Small HD came out with a monitor that fulfills a lot of what people have been asking for in an affordable package. That monitor with HD-SDI would probably be in the $1800 range because of the cost of parts.

So I don't understand why the "No HD-SDI" complaints - if you want a monitor that does HD-SDI, spend the money and buy one.

Now, there will be some full 1280x720 monitors with HD-SDI coming out by the end of the summer... Oops, did I say that out loud? :D

I'd view it differently if the component outputs weren't so wonky (at the camera). Not up to production-level snuff in my opinion. Still, it is better than SD out.

I think to put SmallHD on HPX500 via component and use it like viewfinder for better focusing. All users of HPX500 know that standard VF is not good... Some owners of second viewfinder VF20WB are not enough satisfied, so I decided to buy on camera HD monitor to solve the problem. SmallHD has a full 720p resolution and costs only 799USD. SmallHD has good opinion on the websites but I am not sure does component out of HPX500 give HD signal on SmallHD? Of course it would be the best hdsdi connection but have we wait for "some full 1280x720 monitors with HD-SDI coming out by the end of the summer..." as Kit Hannah has written? If component out gives us the same quality like hdsdi... smallHD would be the best on camera monitor (in the present time)!

I'm using the SmallHD with the HPX500 via component and it does a great job. The monitor is very sharp and beats anything the camera offers for focusing by a million miles. My only complaint is when panning, the image stutters or strobes a little. I have been shooting 720P and the monitor picks up the image full screen without having to change settings. I have heard shooting in 1080i reduces the stutter but haven't tried it yet as my projects dictate 720P.

A side note about the folks at Smallhd. I had warrantee issue with my first monitor that I purchased during their pre-release sale. I emailed the company asking about a warrantee exchange and they emailed me back the next day saying that all I needed to do was send the first back and they would exchange it. I needed the monitor for a project that was scheduled couple of days later so I waited to send it back. It still worked as a focusing aid. However four days later a brand new replacement monitor arrived at my door and I hadn't sent in the original for exchange yet. Their customer service is unbelievably good. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another product from them.

It sounds good!!! For customers from Europe shipping price on SmallHD monitor DP1 and all accessories is so low - to Poland 80,12$ (subtotal 978$)... When I will buy smallHD I will inform all of you how does DP1 work with HPX500 in my hands. I will also prepare some photos.

Ok......summer's over
tell us where the 1280X720 monitors are at?????......:D

There was someone who made custom HD monitors with SDI here, I forget what it was called, but he was from the L.A. area I think.

I'd appreciate it if someone put up a link for it.

Yes, I have heard about it... With SmallHD is different: I was waiting six days to get it. The package came yesterday: DP1 and sunhood. Packed with big spongue surface - good for long trip. I need few days to test it so now I can say only few things: DP1 works perfectly via component with HPX500. Focusing is very easy. It is not so heavy as I have thought. In few days testing info. Keep in tough if you are interesting in...

Now more... I have DP1 monitor and sunhood.
1. Without arm like Dedolight Noga Art. Mount. Arm DG1105 (300g only, 211 mm long, 133,95USD at B&H) is difficult... It is possible to use small photo head but I want to work with SmallHD monitor sometimes without tripod. I prepared for while 30cm long metal plate so it works.
2. In direct sunlight is very difficult to work... But it is normal: I worked with Panasonic big 5" viewfinder and in direct sun it was no possibility to work without 30 cm long (till operator head) sunhood.
3. When you are moving DP1 screen produced small strobo but it disapeared fast and it is not problem for operating a focus or so...
4. Picture is sharp. I have no problem with focusing. A standard viewfinder made me crazy because of focusing. I have had very often filling "image is out of focus" even if it was.
5. It is too fast to say something about noiseness in dark areas of picture but I bought DP1 to cut focusing problems so clear picture is not so important.
6. Menu is very "friendly". Monitor was well calibrated I did not make any changes. Only I adjusted "scale" and "V-H size" etc.
7. I power monitor from Anton Bauer batery.
On next week I will work for TV and I will tell you how is it with "fast" working...

camcorder
you could be nerves...

DP1

Seriously cosidering this DP1 but also like IKAN's V5600 as well. Anyone have any regrets or disappointments with either one and in what area?

How is the DP1's image standing when shooting outside with/without the hood?
