HPX371e small Jello effect?

yes good point Erik i had forgotten that, i think panasonic have created a great series of cameras for the price point. I'm certainly very glad i bought mine .

Just watched the piece on YouTube. Only watched it once but I was looking for the effect but didn't spot it.
Colour profile and dynamic range is class ic Panasonic to my eyes, and producers have always loved it.
I can see lots of "skewing" on the verticals of the buildings but it's always hard to know how much of it is down to web viewing (probably most of it?) That's why I never make any decissions based on web shots, it's pointless.
Good to get your feedback on the new machine.

I used Edius 5.5 for the edit and exported as 8mb/s 720p wmv. I was playing around last night and finally got the H264 exporter working, i made a new 6mb/s file and it was a lot sharper and clearer.. Wish i had known that to start with, looks like H264 is the way to go.

Ill give you a clue, look at the big blue pump then look at the clouds behind it :)

I think the skew in the buildings is prob youtubes rehash of the vid, i didnt see it in the editor but ill check when i get home.

I have noticed a small thing,i was practising using macro on some leaves the other day and on some shots i could see a "shimmering" effect on some leaves.

This was using 1080 25p/180 deg shutter and handheld, it seemed that very small movements caused the effect. You can also see the effect in both the viewfinder and lcd screen, i tried all shooting modes and its still there.

The same defect of my old HPX301, I've sell it because this problem. I can see that panasonic don't reach to correct this problem..

Where are you seeing the effect Danius?
I just watched your clip and I could see blur and a bit of skew, but they'd both be normal shooting with progressive with quick pans like you did (the blur) and with a CMOS sesnor with rolling shutter (the skew).
This is not the same as Garion showed, unless I'm missing it, which is possible - exactly which bit are you looking at?

Hi Steve, look on the tree body, or on the map on the bag, this is not a normal blur, i know it. On the normal blur of a progressive shot you don't see part of the current frame in the next 3 frame.. This is ghosting effect, the same of Garion, is strongest in progressive but is present (weak) in interlaced too on hpx301. In Italy many forum have discussions about the ghosting effect of the hpx301. Panasonic Italy have tell me directly that this is an unrecoverable defect. I've an EX1 and I've take the same shot (bag and tree) in progressive mode, and never on the EX1 material I've see that terrible effect. I've sell my 301 because I shot in progressive only (short film). I have now an EX1 and a PMW 350 and I can't found a similar problem. I've think that in the HPX371 the problem has been fixed, but I can see that it still remain.
I've a lot of shot of 301 with this problem and other user in this forum too..
Sorry for my bad english

No problem with your English, very good indeed!
OK, you obviously are seeing the same issue, must just be internet viewing not letting me see it.
I bet a lot of people are really disappointed that there is no official technical answer from Panasonic - obviously a fix would be what you'd expect, but even just a reason why would surely not be too much to ask? Very very poor Panny.

Maybe they are hoping that the talk on this goes away, just like that on the converting of the 300 to the 370 has died.

I would love to know what causes the efffect, i was fully prepared when i bought the camera to expect some skew if i panned fast at telephoto or maybe a little jello if i did the congo with the cam so to speak.

Never expected to see this effect when holding the camera still on full wide open. Course i am getting on a bit so i wouldnt expect the younger memebers on this board to have my problem :p

They didn't "hope that went away", they answered it: it is not possible.

As far as this one goes, I have forwarded the videos on to the people that I know of who can hopefully get it to the right people. I would expect them to answer when they have an answer.

Great, thanks Barry. It's actually quite a minor effect and I don't think most folks are that worried about it, certainly not enough to put them off buying the camera - which is a real steal.
It would just be good to know what it is, a) out of pure interest, and b) to know how users could avoid it or minimise it.

Agreed. I wish I had one, this is the kind of thing I'd love to dig into and try to figure out.

My guess would be that it might be related to some sort of dynamic function, maybe DRS? If this was a long-GoP codec I'd lay the blame squarely at the codec, because this is the type of motion-estimation thing that a long-GoP codec would cause, but they say it happens even in DVCPRO-HD, so ... can't be that.

I should be getting one to look at in a few days. Probably wouldn't buy one, as most of my work is with Varicam 2700, but really interested to see just how close the 371 could get to it in terms of overall excellence.

I must admit that i was very impressed with how clean the picture is on the 371. Even with coring at 0 i find it hard to notice the noise and the image has a very pleasing full bodied look to it.

I would love to hear your opinions on the camera as a professional user, i have never used anything bigger than the 300 series and i have litttle else to compare it to.

This is very interesting. It is not rolling shutter of course. It looks similar to some very high compression experiments I did with GOP codecs. Low contrast texture did not move a fast as it should. If there was a bug in the GOP coding, it wouldn't show in DVCPROHD recordings though.

You can see the same effect on the door on the left. Is that due to vimeo compression? Do you see a problem with the door tones in the camera files?

Hi yes the shifting shadow on the door is really there on my footage, i hadnt spotted that one lol.

ive been reading what others have experienced and had an idea, we know the noise on the 370 is better now so they are employing some new type of noise reduction.

Maybe it is this which is causing the effect ?? might explain why i can see it in all resolutions and all codecs.. as its the noise reduction over compensating ???

p.s. just saw Otis on the other thread is having the same idea :)
