HPX300 problems shooting AVC-Intra

I have owned the HPX500 since it came out and recently purchased the HPX300 for its AVC-Intra capabilities.
When we ingest the footage and play it back from the FCP timeline, the footage is full of noise. This is happening in the AVC-50 and AVC-100. Not sure what the problem is, but I love the P2 format and these cameras and have had no problems until this.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Have you rendered the footage on the FCP timeline (does it have a green bar above)?

Also, are you using the new version of Final Cut with native AVC-Intra or the previous version? If the previous version, what codec did you use to ingest the footage? I've been shooting a lot of AVC-100 footage and - since I don't have the new version of FCP yet - bring it in using Apple's ProRes 422 (not HQ). It looks spectacular!

We have the older FCP version. All the footage was rendered and brought in using Apple's Pro Res 422 (not HQ). This is green screen footage and it is full of noise.

I might be able to assist if you would give me the exact version of FCP and QT, and what Intel Mac you are using.

David, we have not upgraded to the new Suite which has FCP 7, but our FCP and QT versions are the latest from the last Suite. As for the computer , I'm not sure what the exact specs are, as I am not the Editor, just the shooter, but I believe it is about 2.5 years old. I do know it is Intel based.

I have this noise problem too, and in another post I was advised to upgrade to the latest firmware in the camera and try using professionally designed scene files instead of the defaults. It is pretty annoying that the picture looks so grainy and shabby straight out of the box though. My first reaction was... HUH! How the hell did all that noise get in the picture???!!!! My gain was on -3db etc... It looks horrible aye. Anyway, I am updating my camera this evening and will let you know how it goes after doing some tests.

Have you got on top of the noise issue???

I'm using FCP 7 and cannot find a setting to edit Intra native....

The timeline defaults to ProRes...

Cheers

I too am having problems with noise using the AVC 50 and 100 settings. I've primarily shot 720 24p with the HVX200 and it's a drag to have my business partner walk into the editing suite and say how much better the HVX footage looks than the HVX300. I've assured him I'll work it out, but to my eye there is no question the noise level is apparent in a way that it is not in DVCPro HD (when shot on the HVX300 or the HVX200).

Somebody set me straight and I'll say thank you very much, truly.

You're definitely doing something wrong if you're seeing more noise on a 300 than you did on the 200. The 300 is substantially, significantly cleaner than the original HVX200.

Either you've got DRS on, or you're using the gain, or we've seen reports from people who were seriously underexposing their video because they weren't using the zebras properly.... but when shot properly the 300 is way cleaner than the 200.

Is the footage noisy only after importing, or played back live off the camera? If it's only after importing, you probably have some sort of NLE issue. If it's noisy playing back from the camera, you'll need to spend some time to figure out why and rectify it, because that's not normal.

Look at the posts by lordbiggus in this thread for an example of someone who went from "yuck, noisy" to "the image came back picture perfect":

Yes I did get on top of the noise problem. I turned DRS completely off in the camera and exposed my shots correctly. Make sure your gain is also set to -3db.
