greetings all,
have a maxtor onetouch 4 mini (500GB) that is not being recognized by the hpx300 - i'm looking to transfer footage directly from the 300 to the HD....suggestions as to what i might be doing wrong??

going into usb host mode, but in thumbnail menu, i get no options to copy to the HDD.

thank you!

Format the disk using the cam menu. It'll be good for nothing else then mind as I found out to my cost trying to then use the drive on my laptop. Format it having the card you need in the cam slot - I THINK it only creates partitions equal to the P2 card. I think it creates new partitions thereafter till the drive is full (haven't had time to check)

Desperate for instructions Panasonic, not trial and error....

i don't even get the option of formatting the disk - it's grey'd-out.
i'm guessing it's the drive for some reason.
anyone have a specific portable model that i can use in the field?

I believe that drive uses a hardwired raid for two drives.

If so, it won't work. I've seen similar issues in the HVX200 posts as well.

But this is USB host mode, I don't know if the same restriction would apply...

Did you turn USB Host Mode on in the system menu?

You are in USB host mode and you get the light on the cam showing connection and the LCD screen saying connected? What colour is the little HDD icon top right in the LCD? If its red it means it needs a format. Try an USB stick and format it by cam to test... (it'll be good for nothing else afterwards mind unless you use an utility to do a low level format on it).

i've used a few different drives and usb sticks and have yet to be given the option to format any of them. it's always grey'd out.

i have access to another 300, so hopefully i'll get them side-by-side and do some comparisons soon.

thanks for the input - one more question - how should the drive be formatted (by my computer) to enable the camera to see it so that the camera can then properly format it? (make sense?)

You cant write to a HDD that has been formatted by a PC as far as I know...

My menu pushes to format an ext HDD:

Host mode
PC mode
>drive spins and light on cam and drive, red HDD icon top right<
Thumbnail
hdd
explore
select (centre button)
menu (bottom right)
operation
FORMTT HDD

Are you missing the 'leap' where you press menu bottom right half way through??? NOT intuitive...

EXPLORE is grey'd out, so i can't proceed.

(top right of window, from right back to the left: battery level icon, HDD, grey'd out HDD icon, 2, 1)

thanks for the help - i need to find a drive that is established to work with a 300 and then go from there....

Puzzling - no access to an USB stick either?!

I'm using a Formac 160Gb HDD - has firewire and USB and was £50UKP. Plug and Play :)

it appears that my maxtor is no good in this situation - but i have verified that the procedure works with a lacie ruggedized portable hard drive - i think it was 350gb.

thanks much for all the input - i really do appreciate it!!!

bottom line - not all drives work.

Maybe other folks that are having success with a particular hard drive could post the make / model for those of us looking to buy?

I have a Seagate 360GB drive that works just fine. Some of the Maxtors have a chip that somehow gets in the way of the format process from the camera or so I am told. Don't know have only used the Seagate and have been successful.

Best,

Jan

i just bought two LaCie 301310 200GB Rugged Portable Hard Disk Drive for USB and Firewire 400/800 and they work perfectly. they're also 7200rpm in case i want/need to edit directly from the drive...
