HPX170 won't mount via Firewire

Trying to connect my HPX170 via firewire for offload through my Windows 7 computer does not work... fully.

P2 Viewer does not recognize that the camera is mounted when connected via Firewire. USB mode works though (pretty slow).

Looking for faster speed via Firewire since there are no Windows 7 64bit drivers for my Duel-Adapter. Any ideas?

i had the same problem when i first got my hpx, i tried firewire and it wouldnt work at all and i bought a usb 2.0 cord and it worked fine. Its also pretty fast too.

maybe its the firmware?

id say use usb2.0 its decent

Firewire has been known to be hit or miss with Windows users, USB 2.0 is recommended. Almost every Mac however accepts and recognizes the camera via firewire.

Dang. That is a bummer to hear. I wonder why Panasonic doesn't come out with supported drivers...

I'm usually doing run and gun stuff and need to dump cards super fast. I guess I'll have to live with USB 17mbps speeds.

If you're getting 17mbps speeds, you're doing something terribly wrong. You should be getting 2 gigabytes per minute, depending on what drive you're connected to. USB2 supports 480mbps, not 17mbps.

Make sure you're not connecting to a USB1.1 port, and don't try to connect through a hub. Connect the camera directly via USB2, and offload to a fast drive (preferably one that's not on the same USB bus) and you should get 2 gigs per minute, or faster.

As far as "dumping cards super fast", the biggest restriction is usually what you're copying the cards TO. Hard drives ain't that fast. If you want the fastest transfer times, use a laptop with a SATA SSD and a PCMCIA slot (or the Rosewill/Addonics adapter in an ExpressCard slot), or just get one of THESE, and hook it up to an SSD drive. You should be able to offload a 16GB E-series card in just a few minutes, and if you're using a really fast SSD you could maybe offload that whole card in just a couple of minutes.

Hi Barry,

I am using USB 2.0 - 7200rpm drive. I also tried offloading to my eSata raid setup (7200rpm drives) and get very slow speeds. It takes about 30 minutes to offload 16gb (I'm using E-Series P2 cards). Not sure what's going on here... I'm going to see if I can update the USB 2.0 drivers.

btw, Congratulations on your work with RedBull's project stratos!

Yeah, I don't know what's up with your system, but you should be getting performance at least 4x as good as that... a 16GB card on a modern laptop should transfer in about 8 minutes, not 30... if you're connecting the camera by USB, and the drive by USB, then they'll be sharing the USB bus and that will slow everything down, but I don't know that it would slow it down to 1/4 the normal speed... Good luck with your diagnostics and let us know how it turns out.
