Here is some footage from some of the lighting experiments I've been doing lately.

I also tried out my "Zaza Slider" that I assembled earlier that day.

Thanks Frank,

The lighting kit nothing fancy. In the living room - One Lowel 650 CTB bounced across the door in the BG and another 650 1/2CTB (I think) on the talent - my wife ; ) that I let spill onto the curtains. In her lap behind the book is a 4x4 lite pad.

In the bedroom I had a 650 Lowel full CTB about 5 feet from her. She was holding the lite pad in her left (off camera) hand.

Against the back wall I used a 1k also full CTB. For the shot with the "tree branches" moving, I shook a twig with some leaves on it about three feet in front of the 1k, hence no dolly move on that shot ; )

I should've taken more time as I had the Master Ped a bit too low even for this sort of "vibe".

A little levels and CC using FCP and a home made Magic Bullet setting to fake the shallower DOF (I'm still waiting for my G35).

LOTS to learn.

thanks for looking.

Again dmc ... nice work! Thanks for getting us some moving footage to compair with the stills you had earlier.

With regard to your ZaZa slider my fellow canuck ... did you order the igus parts here or through the US? I see we have a rep in Alberta, I was wondering if you used him? If so, do you mind me asking what he charged you?

thanks for the feedback Eljoninjo.
Yeah I agree with your comments, it's a little too blue. I was going for something really stylized and have probably been watching too much Dario Argento lately.

Hey Take_1 - thanks.
I actually called the US (Rhode Is. I think) and they gave me the number of the Canadian office in Concord Ont. - 800. 965. 2496. The fella's name was Oliver Hayward. Super helpful and crazy prompt with their service. It was around $200 - I opted for a slightly longer run of the rail (about 5 feet) which increased the price a bit.

I still need tons of practice with it but I like it so far.

5 feet! Dude! You are an animal, that's a long stretch of track. Now, if we could figure out how to mod a crank to it like kessler's those longer tracks would be a no brainer to glide over with consistent speed. Thanks for the info on the contact. I think I may place an order today.

dmc, the footage is stunning imo. i love the lighting and stuff, very freaking cool!

regarding the parts that you ordered, can you post up what you ordered and the part numbers? I want to order the parts tomorrow but that zaza thread is massive and I saw there were a ton of variation of parts that guys were ordering.

Oh also, are you happy with the 5 foot length that you're dealing with or would you have ordered shorter if you could do it over?

I found the same thing, but ZaZa has been really good about making sure that the most current info is on his very first post. I know some others have adjusted the formula to suit their specific needs.

thanks for the kind words Jay - I've been digging your footage too!!

In terms of the parts, here are exactly the part numbers I ordered:
WS-16-60 Drylin 'W' rail (1525mm long)
WW-16-60-10 Drylin 'W' carriage

that's it - it was super easy.

I added a couple of rubber "bumpers" to each of the ends so that the carriage doesn't accidently fall off. (tip: I bought these from a hobby brew store. They use them in beer/wine making.)

Okay, my thinking on the 5' length was that it'd be easier to cut a little off rather than not have enough. As it is, I think I made the right call. While it's REALLY tough to pull off a consistent 5' move (at least for me), it's nice to have a little elbow room. Some of the moves I did in those tests were about 3-4' so a 5' length isn't too bad IMHO. It also avoids having to reset everything just for a foot or so.

Oops - I forgot to say that my opinion on the rail length may change once I get my 35mm adapter this week (hopefully). The shallower DOF is going to make me rethink my "dollying" technique a little.

thanks again for watching!

: )

You could also have several different lengths kicking around for different purposes and just change out the center carriage ...

Totally - I actually debated ordering an additional small 2" section.

Did you order yours yet Take_1?

I was going to today, but I got distracted with work ... (sigh) Its on the list for this week though for sure. I want to get it up and running and see if we can use it on our new pilot later next month.

Have you seen my Loss Fest entry?

I wanted the room only lit by a christmas tree.
That was quite a challange, cause the HVX200 is not exactly known as "Low Noise Queen of the Night".

Took me about 3k and some MagicBullet to get it where I wanted it.

Have a look and tell me what you think (link is in my signature).

Really, REALLY nice Frank! Great lighting and perfect art direction.

My favorite shot is the woman leaning against the door frame smoking - great edge lighting on her. I also like the shot where she gets her coat from the closet.

Nicely directed performances too.

Awesome job overall!
