Hello everybody . I wanted to know if anybody shot with Sony HDR-FX1 before. I need to decide if I should go with sony or panasonic camera. The thing is that I can get Sony for Free and I would have to rent out HVX200. What are your thoughts about picture quality when comparing these two. Thanks

Both cams look good in the right hands...
I´d prefer the HVX, BUT since you can get the FX1 for free, it really depends on what budget your on...
Check the clips section to look at work done with these cams...

The Z1U is much better than FX1, with more image control and the ability to switch between PAL and NTSC as well as XLR input. I think it includes a CF25 mode as well which looks pretty good. If you can get it for free then go for the Z1 and spend the money on something else.

i believe the Z1 has a similar 24PA function, at 1080, giving your HDV @ 1080p24.

I've played with the Z1 and it did impress me. I've used the FX1 and hated it at first, but then was very impressed with the image, and the CF24 of the FX1 looks better after converted to AIC and ouputted than it does when viewing dailies through the cam.

DVCPRO HD blows HDV away, but it depends on budget... and if you're capable, you can do great things with HDV. If you're using the FX1, make sure you only used the 'Expanded Focus' option combined with a crash zoom/focus, cuz it's false if you don't crash zoom/focus as well. It's a pretty cold camera, so you'll want to warm it up probably in cam or in post. Also, it's cinegamma is super lame, it just darkens the image. Prepare to do some filmic CC in post, more so than normal, but only after converted to AIC, cutting native HDV is awful. The focus mechanism in the FX1 is a joke. It you set focus marks for pulling, and you go past infinity, it'll reset and you'll have to set it up again... my AC on that show wanted to kill the cam!

If the Z1 is free, you can put more money on lights, grip and dolly... (yes?) and really paint your compositions, and have longer record times w/ 85min tapes, unless yur HVX has a FS.

Also, 'Flags of our Fathers' and 'Letters from Iwo Jima' used the Z1 and cut together HDV footage with Super35... seamlessly! Apparently infamous ghosting/artifacting of HDV wasn't a problem for them... maybe they were lucky or maybe the HDV algorithm has come a long way since '04.

CF24 is a joke.

if you have to and i mean really have too, shoot CF25, then slow it down, but it takes a hit on resolution.

Also sony;s HDV implimentation isnt the best. Canon and JVC is better.

Ditto on the HDV is hell to edit. Ican play one stream fine, but once you do ANYTHING to the footage, its like dragging a bucket through cold molases.

Yeah a free Z1u would be the way to go. Shot pal and slow it down. That will give you great quality. See Tomorrow is Today. I saw that at a movie theater in LA and it looked great. Get this it was being projected from a Standard Definition DVD. Ever since that I new that we have reached the level where the hdv cameras can hold up on the big screen. Don't blow out them whites thou.

I think going from 25P to 24P is overrated and not worth the hassle -- I doubt most people can even tell the difference. Just MHO.

yea its not worth it in the PC/Mac computer world, where 25p can jsut be watched, but if you make a DVD, not all TV's can handle a pal signal. most sony's can, and i think most panasonics can, but liek a cheap set wont know what to do with it.

not to disagree on purpose or anything, but i thought that the Z1 adopted the true 24p (panasonic's patented) cadence. and to be honest, even as a DVXUser and DVX lover, and f900 hater, i was indeed impressed with the CF24 or 24p of the Z1, the CF24 on the FX1 is somethin to stay away from... but I think you'll be happy with the Z1... if you put the money saved from not renting an HVX in to lighting.

Is it a short, fiction, or is it an MV, a commercial?

The v1 i think, has Real 24p. But its image is broken, so it pracitcally useless.

damn! i was impressed with the V1 then, the newest sony HDV cam. Maybe it was the V1 that was used on 'Flags' and 'Letters'. What do you mean 'broken' image?

Mumin... if it's the Z1 you have as an option... perhaps stay away. If it's the V1 that's option, consider it.
