HPX170 lens

What is different about the HPX170's lens other than it's smaller thread size and wider/less telephoto? I didn't see the Leica logo on the lens shade, is it manufactured by a different company?

It's still a Leica lens.

I'm assuming you're comparing it with the HVX200A.

Here are some of the lens specs that I have in front of me.

Additional ND filters (1/4, 1/16, 1/64) HVX only had 1/8 and 1/64

New focal length (3.9mm - 51mm) HVX is 4.2mm - 55mm

They both still have the same telephoto, 13X.

Hope this helps.

New 13x zoom lens is smaller in diameter (72mm vs. 82mm) and with a wider angle field of view (3.9 to 51mm, vs. 4.2 to 55mm).

Jan,

Does it have the same bayonet mount as a DVX? If so, I just sold a nice
Century wide angle and tele converter that I could have used with it.:crybaby:

Would the lens being smaller diameter on the 170 mean that the widest possible aperture is smaller than the HVX's? Giving the HVX a shallower DOF?

The lens looks/feels/acts exactly like the HVX/DVX lens. It's the same Leica Dicomar design.

The bayonet does match the DVX's bayonet.

The widest possible aperture, at full wide angle, is 1.6 across the board. At full telephoto, the 170 & 150 are f/3.0 instead of f/2.8.

At equivalent focal lengths, the 150/170 or 200A will have slightly shallower DOF than an HVX200, because the chipset is about 7% bigger. But the 200 has more magnified telephoto, so -- meh, it probably nets out about the same.
