hpx170 audio issue

I have been looking for a way to use my wireless lav mic with my HPX170, and I came to a solution that seemed to work but I am worried it may have caused problems with my camera. I am not an expert when it comes to audio.

I used this XLR to 1/8inch adapter out of my camera's XLR port and plugged my mic into the female 1/8inch end of the adapter

Adapter: http://www.martelelectronics.com/1159.html

Mic: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3656-REG/Azden_WLX_PRO_WLX_Pro_Wireless_Lavalier.html

It seemed to work great, I had no issues immediately.

Today I plugged it in again and all I am getting is very loud static. I tested it in my secondary XLR port and it worked fine. I unplugged it immediately because I was worried it may damage my other XLR port as well if that is what happened.

I became even more confused when I plugged my boom mic into the XLR port I thought was damaged and it worked fine.

Please let me know what could cause this, any thoughts are much appreciated.

Thanks!!

dont see how any of that could have caused damage. just for shits and giggles are the mic/line switches on the camera set the same?

Yes they were set the same, I tried switching back and forth from mic to line to see if for some reason it might help as well but it did not.

Is phantom power on? That might be interfering with your wireless set. Inexpensive wireless kits are prone to all sorts of noise problems, so you might want to start there when troubleshooting.

That setup shouldn't cause any damage (and certainly not to the camera; not sure how that adapter is wired so if phantom would even make it to the receiver).

But I wouldn't be surprised if you got hiss out of those mics anyway.

I'm not sure how to check if phantom power is on, do you mean on the mic or can you enable/disable phantom power on the camera itself? Please excuse my ignorance I am still new to audio and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it so I can solve issues like this!

Also... If it seems that all hope is lost for this particular setup, does anyone have any suggestions to get this microphone working with my current setup? (hpx170 with the equipment linked above)?

Thanks again everyone

It worked! Thank you so much. I did not realize that it was phantom power I was turning on and off, I just assumed it was the xlr input itself.

Much appreciated!

just so you'll know for the future +48v or "phantom" power is a power supply for certain microphones that require power.

generally, if you have to put batteries in your mic. you will need to leave phantom power OFF on that input.
