HPX170 and the LEX HVX Optimization kit?

Just wondering if anyone has tested:
hpx170 and LEX with Stock achromat vs. hpx170 and LEX with HVX Optimized achromat, Letus 72mm thread ring
and also...
hpx170 and LEX with Stock achromat vs. hpx170 and LEX with HVX Optimized achromat, HPX Optimized 82mm thread ring + step-down ring
??

I own an Ultimate, not an Extreme. The achromat used for the HVX200 and EX1 optimization kits works very well with the HPX170. Edge to edge focus is better than with the 200/200A, which has a different focus point in the center vs. corners. There is almost no chromatic aberration, and it's sharp.

I have also discovered that in some conditions the 170 is a bit more light sensitive than the 200A, which is helpful with any 35mm DOF adapter.

The same with SGPro: the HVX200 optimation kit works better than the stock achromat

so the glass in the ex-1 and hvx opti kits are the same?

does this mean if i'm switching from the ex-1 to the hpx-170, i just need to buy the 72 mm thread ring? instead of the hvx opti kit?

Yes, at least in the case of the Ultimate.

so the distance from the achromat to the camera lens doesn't make a difference? the hvx optimized thread ring and the regular 72mm thread ring have different depths.

Yes, I ordered a regular 72mm step down ring and it works great with the 170, even though it's a different thickness than the 82mm ring used for the HVX optimization kit--which I didn't
find to be very optimal, compared to the edge to edge focus of the EX1(77mm) and 170.

Hey Dino,

I just had a question regarding your 72mm issue. I just purchased an LEX with the HVX optimization. I realized today that the kit comes with an 82mm attachment and that my HPX170 has a 72mm thread. I started weighing my options to take care of this issue.

There was the obvious choice:

Buy this and be done with it: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/535516-REG/Letus35_LTRING_EX_72_LTRING_EX_72_Adapter.html

I thought this was a bit expensive for what it was though. Then, I saw your post in regards to a "regular 72mm step down ring" and was wondering if this was a cheaper yet viable solution to my issue. Was it in fact an 82-72mm step down ring or was it a 72mm-82mm step up ring? It was my understanding that a step down ring started at the lens, being 82mm, and then sizing it down to 72mm on the filter side. If my understanding was correct, then wouldn't it be a 72mm-82mm step up ring?

If so, could you please tell me which of these would actually work and if there is any issue with the added thickness of the step up/down adapter?

Thanks for your time.

*UPDATE*

I went ahead and ordered a step down ring (82mm-72mm) to use with the LEX and HPX170, I should have read into it a bit more like I thought and gotten the Step Up Ring (72mm-82mm). I had to send back the step down ring and order the step up ring. Works fine now. The only issue with using this is that the threads force the LEX to either be loose or upside down. Rails are a must.

So for future reference, anybody trying to use an LEX with an HPX170 and HVX200 optimization, get a step up ring, not a step down ring.
