HPX170 - A Second Look

I am hoping Panasonic is gonna release the 64GB around the same time as the 170. I would be very interested in being an early adopter of such GIGage

Question regarding DV recording

Question regarding DV recording

My video work is presently limited to standard definition DV (avi) editing. I will soon move up to HD but for the time being will continue using the SD format. I'm interested in acquiring the HPX170 and would use it initially in the SD format. However I see in the HPX170 brochure (Page 6) that recording in the 480/60i format employs a DVCPRO/DV cordec. Is this the same as the old DV (avi) format that I'm familiar with or is it something else that wouldn't work with my present editing system?

Any advice would be appreciated

While it is the same codec, DV, it would be in a file based format. It may be totally possible for your system to work with these files even though they are not AVI, there are programs like Raylight that can help move them into yur system. However since you didn't identify your edit system, it is hard to give a complete answer. Which edit system do you have?

Best,

Jan

I see, I was not for a while on the site but I read somewhere on this site that you get the new BG HPX17 book with the HPX170 so I assumed you already had access to a final version of the 170 to be able to write the book. Just for curiousity, how can you write a book if you don't know if there are any final changes ???

Nope, they haven't released the final version yet.

I had the latest preproduction model to work with. But it wasn't a guaranteed final release version. I put in all the features that I discovered from that version, but I'm hedging my bets against there being any further changes in the final version, that's all.

I just got off of the phone with VideoScope and Spec Comm and they both said two different things on the release date. Go figure, lol.... One said today was the release date but they didnt have anything in stock and the other said end of October.

Not that any of it matters as it's all he said/she said but I just figured I'd share some of what I heard.

If someone's saying "end of October" they're probably already sold out of their initial allocation and are estimating when they'll have enough to fill walk-in orders.

They both are probably right. Spec Comm may be sold through their allocations to the end of October, and Videoscope isn't. The first ones have not left the factory though, but the firsts should leave the facotry probably next week sometime, can't say where they are headed though.

Best,

Jan

I haven't really looked around yet. What is availablility like at the main online dealers? Will I be able to pick up one in a few weeks, or are they sold out of their initial shipments?

I really don't need one until the end of October, but I'd like to mess around with it as much as possile before winter (filming snowboarding)

ok, one more....

Has anyone contacted 16x9, Century or other lens makers to find out the ETA of 72mm HD lenses for the HPX?

I didn't think of that but it makes total sense.

Hey Jan,
Is there a retail location in NJ (central NJ) that I may buy the camera from? I don't know of any but I hoped that you might.

16x9 already has HD lenses with 72mm mounts, atleast a few, my fisheye has 72, but with 82mm adapter ring for hvx.
