HPX170 - A Second Look

While I was looking for some info in Panasonic broadcast europe I found the european press release for the hpx171, and it said that the retail price is "AG-HPX171E is €4,350 plus VAT"
So in the end it would be something around 5000€..... Shame it doesn't say anything about an included 16gb card.....

the european market is nowhere near the American market, so there is almost no chance that we will ever see bundles like he HVX/HPX book or P2 cards, the lower volumes sold in europe just makes the camera to expensive to competitively bundle products.

True, so lets buy more cameras!!!!!

So, let me hypothesize for a second.

With much cleaner noise, especially in the darker areas, and higher sensitivity

Wouldn't it be conceivable that on the 170, you could crank up the sharpness without having to use coring as much, while still being in cinelike D, and also having to stop down a tad more...

thereby closing the infamous 'resolution' gap between the panny line and the EX1/3 series quite a bit more by having a (usably) sharper picture?

I have been getting PMs about the contact info for Julian the Account executive at AVS.

You can just call him. He said if you mention my name, Robert from DVXuser, he will give you the same price I got. He asked that I not say the exact price, but it is less than $4900. Apparantly it is not an advertised price, so you have to get it through an account executive.

It is always nice to find a guy who will give a little discount to the DVXuser community. We have alot of buying power as a group!

David,
I am in Atlanta and he is in San Diego.
I got the price this time and I also got the pretty much same price last year for the HVX200.

If there is a regional limitation it does not appear to affect AVS.

Sounds good. I just remember talking to someone down there and being told that the less expensive price was limiting by miles from the company.

If I took delivery in that area, no problem.

It could have been EVS or AVS -- not certain.

Quick Question. Since the HVX is closer to size of the DVX, will a rain jacket made for the DVX work well with the HPX170? What about 2x lenses and .7x lenses made for the DVX? Will that glass (assuming its a century optics or other highend brand) hold up to for HD? Trying to figure out how much of my DVX kit will transfer over to the HPX170.

Hey Jan,

I am just wondering why the p2 drivers are available for Windows Vista x64 but not XP x64? Leaving those of us using XP x64 with no way of importing footage from the camera to computer. How hard could it be to make it XP compatible if you already have the Vista x64 version.

Thanks
Ryan

Anyone know about the Canadian pricing/availability of the hpx170? Cuz the hvx200a is available here for $5200-5700 (depending where you look) but that's *without* the free 16GB card. This leads me to think that the 5yr Panny warranty (1yr default + 4yrs upon product registration) of the 170 will also only be available in the States (just like the 16gig-er). Not that much of biggie, but still...

monday in van ,a canadian dealer{LL] said ,not going to be available till late oct. will be $5200. but no 16gb card. did not ask about warrentty but i am sure it would be the same 5 yrs. hopefully the zoom /irus controller from my hvx200 will work on the 170hpx.

that is justa copy of the us press release, . jan would be able to shine some light on the canadians. maybe she just works for panasonic usa?with the hvx200 the us customers got the p2 card. the canadians got hockey cards.

That's the press release for the American market, I believe.

Buying it from the states wouldn't be that bad an idea, since the extended warranty is really only given out by Panny with the hope that the 170 will not be as prone to breaking down as a tape-based cam. If that is true - and your 170 is in good shape - then it's (potentially) only going down to the factory for firmware upgrades, which are usually infrequent. Plus you'd get a free 16GB card. But we'll have to wait for the official news...

As a Canadian, I hope to get at least similar pricing, and the included items (16GB card, Barry's book) as US customers. If not, a Canadian retailer loses another sale to cross-border shopping. Please Panasonic, don't do that to your Canadian retailers. Let them be competitive!
