hpx vs ex1

1GB would be enough to hold ONE minute of footage. Or, in 720/24pN mode, two and a half minutes.

16GB can hold between 16 and 42 minutes of footage depending on what mode you shoot (in HD). In DV you could get 64 minutes of footage on 16GB.

ya haha but im upgrading to hd so im gunna prolly shot a lil bit of like 720/24p - 1080
so like 10 min of both maybe

im gunna use the 16gb

lindquist, from several things youve said, i think you need to do some more homework here.

you mention shooting weddings. as barry said above, a single 16 gig P2 card holds about 16-42 minutes depending on what resolution of HD youre shooting. you will MOST DEFINITELY need at least a PAIR of P2 cards for a wedding. you cant just stop the ceremony/reception for 15 min while you transfer your card. so you'll need to be able to shoot to one card while transferring the other. so you'll also need an assistant and a computer on the job to do the transfer while you continue shooting.

another thing to consider is low light. in a situation of just you, your camera and the room. the 170 isnt the best performer. it can do it. ive yet to have a problem, and in the right hands you can make the best of it, but it gets pretty grainy. you can pass it off as stylistic or the "film look" to many people. but some people just dont like it.

im not trying to pee on your picnic. it just sounds to me like this purchase is pretty significant for you and id hate to see you get the wrong thing... or get the right thing for the wrong job...

Lidquist, your sure you really want to buy that camera when you wonder if you shoul bring 1 or 16GB for transfering the tests...?

Edit: what wgzn said.

no offense but i think ive done plenty of research on this camera, the only thing i need to do is rent it out for a day or so and see how my pc handles p2 footage. Shooting weddings is long down the road long after i have atleast 2 (32Gb p2 cards), and if I shoot it would just be for fun not for actual money until i get a full setup with everything i need, and yes thanks for concern but i know all that.

also this camera is for my personal projects to learn it for about 4-6 months.
And as for the low light i dont have a single problem with that at all.

watch that, looks perfect to me!
:D
im not to picky especially if i get a nice led light for it in dark rooms with little to no light.

Sorry i didnt go into detail much earlier , i should of.
and personally i think this camera is perfect for what im looking for.
unless you have another suggestion, but non of those things matter to me at all really, since i will be learning the first few months. I can also just rent a few p2 cards, not that big of a deal to me, thanks for the info tho.

its not for transferring tests. it would be so i can bring the footage back to az so i can edit it and test out my raylight and vegas pro , adobe cs4, ect..

and 16gb will be just fine, kinda confused by what you mean.

and yeah im positive for $3300 I will be buying this camera. yes im 110% sure im buying it weather or not i bring a 1gb or 16gb card. lol thats too good of a price for that camera.

thanks tho

neway
for weddings i think the hmc150 is better with the sd card and all.

umm kinda dumb thing to say.

sd card - Need Powerful editing system, ect..

p2 data - Faster, Holds more data, more expensive. more reliable to me

i mean so your saying the hmc150 is better for weddings because of the sd card?
cant the hpx,hvx do just the same if not better?

I know sd cards are cheaper and all that blalaal but im not looking to spend Extra money on my pc for because of the avchd files. I can just save that money for my pc and buy accessories for my hpx, 35mm adapter, filters, tripod, bag, case, light,
ect..

No, it's not dumb at all, actually.

First, the HMC150 and HPX170... outside of format, media, and connectors... are effectively the same camera.

The HMC is better for weddings because of the LONG record times. I can shoot 99 minutes of 1080p/24 footage that looks every bit as good as the HPX170 onto one $40 16Gb SD card. On one $370 E-Series P2 card, you'll get about 40 minutes at 1080p24 with DVCProHD.

And nowhere is it written you need to edit native. If you're computer is too slow or has issues with AVCHD, you can transcode and edit in another format. I edit in Premiere on a PC, so I can transcode to DVCProHD or DNxHD for free, or Cineform for $129 (I use Cineform). FCP, you're going to end up editing in ProRes422 anyways. Avid - DNxHD. Edius gives you the option for CanopusHQ. If you edit in Cineform, that costs you $129, but you save more money on the camera and media, and don't need to upgrade your computer anymore than you would for DVCProHD.

There are some very legitimate reasons to get an HPX... 4:2:2, variable framerates, HD-SDI out, etc. But unless you actually need those things, and/or have gobs of money to put towards media, shooting weddings on P2 (on a more expensive camera) makes very little sense.

like i said i dont need a hmc150 because of those reasons. Im fine with spending an extra $300 for a hpx that has much better features. 4:2:2., vari. framerates, vetorscope/waveform
monitor, hd sdi out. I thought i also stated that im not going to be on a deadline i would just be filming weddings by my self , and not for money. till i get a hang of it and learn more things until i get the proper accessories. i.e 3-4 32GB p2 cards, tripod , light,ect..with 2-3 32gb p2 cards i would have enough time to shoot what i wanted especially with a laptop an external 2tb harddrive. non of thatt matters to me, I can also rent a farily cheap p2 card also from friends. I wouldnt want to have to spend extra time editing and transcoding , since thats the main reason i want to goto p2 hd and not tape dv, so i dont have to digitize, or anything like that. I thought i also posted my specs and what i edit with..
I have raylight so i dont think i need to buy anything else to get my footage online, aand
ill buy you a hpx170 if you can convince me to buy hmc150 because it aint happening haha.
I guess i could just geta hmc150 and buy all this new software that would end up being more than a hpx alone. and those reasons you stated are my main concern, why not pay an extra $200-300 for hpx features, even $600-700 for those features because they are good to have.
im not only shooting weddings. ill be shooting what ever i like and wont start doing seriouse business work that pays till i get to know people on maui who do that.

guess ima stop heere since i keep having to repeat my self.

sorry for confusion but i stated most of what you said in earlier posts. did you bother reading them..?

I completely understand what you mean, but im getting a hpx for a little more than a hmc,
so i think anyone who would pass that up is not thinking correctly..

Going back, I did see that you're picking it up for $3,300 w/16Gb P2, which is quite the bargain, so it sort of makes sense. But... the HMC comes with the vectorscope/waveform. 4:2:2 is only a really big deal when greenscreening (HMC is 4:2:2 when recording straight out of the camera and not to the SD card). To make use of HD-SDI... you'll need to buy some really expensive hardware (as opposed to sort of expensive to capture HDMI and component). And you don't need to buy a ton of new software... DNxHD is free and works with CS4. The DVCProHD transcoder is free, and it obviously works with all the software you listed. To me, the HPX just seems a lot more expensive in the long run, even at $3,300 for the camera now, than an HMC.

But if that's what you want, that's what you want.

id prolly get into green screen work so thats good. I wont be using hdsdi until long down the road, i got raylight thats all i will need for p2, i just perfer dvcpro over avchd. Id be buying the same accessories for the hmc that i would for the hpx so.,, you said its a bargain, then said you seem to think a hpx with 16gb p2 card 2 batters . og accessories $3300 will be expensive in the long run, iver never seen a hpx go for cheaper than $3500. so for $3300 if thats alot then damn ! ahha id only be paying around $2000-2500 once i sell my camera to have the extra cash for it. hdsdi isnt really somthing ive been thinkin about so , i just want a nice hardcase and a glidecam or glidetrack.

check out my Fav. on my vimeo , thats the kinda work i want to be doin then start doing more seriouse work for weddings and so on to make good money and eventually start my own film company on hawaii, by then ill have everything i need including a nice 8 core g5, canon 7d, maybe even a ex1r as a b or c cam.

but i dont wanna get to ahead of myself, ha

oh ahha, yeah it is. and the media isnt that big of a deal to me since i can rent p2 card or just save up one or two checks and buy (2) 16gb and 16gb depending on price between $600-700

then end up getting like two 32gb cards or two 64gb cards depending on prize, since i know the hpx170 is capable of getting all of the $3300 I ended up spending on it threw work i can do with my friend.

isnt avchd like 35mbps
dvcprohd is 100mbps

Yeah, and who knows, by the time you end up buying new cards, P2 prices may come down.

isnt avchd like 35mbps
dvcprohd is 100mbps

No, AVCHD at highest quality is 21mbps average with 24mbps max. And it's not apples to apples. DVCProHD is much older, I-frame, 4:2:2, and derived from DV. AVCHD is a newer more efficiant codec, long-GOP (hence how hard it is on older CPU's), 4:2:0, and based on H.264/MPEG-4. I've seen stills from the HMC150 and HPX170 shot side by side and there's no discernible difference. It just depends on what you want to do with it.

cool thanks for info, i was lookin at hmc150 at first then read about the long-gop and all that other stuff that the hpx doesnt have. then went onto looking at the hvx and i really dont want a tape deck so im super stoked with the hpx everything ive ever wanted plus more for a great price.
