So I'm loving the T2i so far. I just got it in today and a few hours later I'm recording away. So far after reading the manual not to hard to understand. tested the low light , lovely. the depth of field, ohh so sweet.

Now
this maybe a silly, really newbie question in regards to lenses, but I have to ask.. I bought the cheapo prime, 50mm f1.8 and I'm playing with it and, how do I say this, I dont understand the 'focal range' (if thats even the right terminology , I dont know, it sounds right..lol) but if I'm in tight quarters, trying to pull back and get more in the shot, I dont know how to? I know with my hpx if I'm sitting 4 feet away from a sofa, I can get the whole sofa in the shot & with the T2i and lens I have, the 50mm , I cant. Is that just all about lens sizes? And on that note, I'm borrowing a Canon 17-55 EF-S 2.8 IS lensfrom a friend, would that be better suited to close quarters? I guess my question is just to understand lenses and when to use what when.

I'm trying to better understand the workflow from a former dvx user to an hpx170 user to now a T2i user also-because I'm not getting rid of my hpx170.

any help would be appreciated.

Yes, the differences between the HPX lens and your 50mm is why you are able to fit more into the shot. Because your 50mm is a prime lens, you're locked into that focal length. You cannot "zoom" other than physically placing the camera closer or further from the subject. The 17-55 lens you plan on borrowing should allow you to fit much more into your shot since you can get into the wide angle range (<30 for example).

I would google some photography resources to learn more about how lenses work. There's a lot of good free info out there.

and remember there is a 1.6x crop factor. So if you use a non aps-c lens it will not be the correct focal length. just do the math.
