HPX 170: Sagemax/Mack in addition to Panasonic and Floater insurance?

Hey everyone,

Three weeks ago, I purchased an HPX170 from B&H. I registered with Panasonic for the additional four year manufacturer warranty, which comes out to a total of a five year warranty.

I also just purchased equipment floater insurance for the camera and all my other equipment (editing bay, etc). This insurance covers -- among other things like theft, etc -- accidental damage and it also covers anyone I hire to use my equipment. However, there is a mandatory $1000 deductible on this policy.

First, does anyone here think it is still necessary to get a Sagemax or Mack warranty. Is it worth it? Sagemax doesn't cover any maintenance (CCD cleaning?) like I think Mack does but at least there is no deductible for accidental damage like with my floater insurance. I haven't not yet looked into Mack.

Second, and this is the worst part, I confirmed with Tim at Sagemax (866-231-9734) that except for accidental damage coverage which starts immediately, every other type provided by Sagemax will only start AFTER Panasonic's five year warranty is up. This seems crazy. I doubt I'll want coverage from years five through eight. Has anyone else confirmed this with Sagemax? Is Mack the same?

(For those curious, the Sagemax terms and conditions that deal with this are: Term of Coverage: Term commences upon your date of purchase and continues for the period indicated on your receipt. Coverage for accidental damage from handling begins on the date you purchase your product. All other coverage begins upon the expiration of the shortest portion of your product’s manufacturer’s warranty.")

I have about two more days to make a decision one way or the other. Any help would would be appreciated.

Best,

Joshua

Just an observation:

the five year panasonic warranty does not cover accidental damage. you might want to revisit the representation from Sagemax.

Hi David,

I went back and revised my original post to clarify some sloppy wording on my part to make clear that Sagemax does coverage accidental and it begins immediately. I am aware that Panasonic's five year warranty does not cover accidental damage but in this case, I already have equipment floater insurance which does (though it comes with a deductible).

I'm unclear what you mean here; are you saying I should speak with Sagemax again to clarify whether their coverage does or does not run concurrently with the Panasonic manufacturer warranty? Or did I misunderstand you?
