HPX 170 as a card reader?

Can the hpx170 be connected to a computer and be used to transfer p2 footage off the camera to the computer without having to use a p2 card reader?
Do you Just need the p2 driver and software installed and a USB 2 or FireWire port?
 
Yes.

Use the USB, don't use the firewire. Set the menu so it's a "USB Device", and go into PC mode (go to MCR, hold the button down for three more seconds).

Nope. Use USB period. The FireWire out on newer Macs is painfully slower than USB (one card transfer was going to take an hour over FireWire, so I told the guy to switch to USB for his MacBook Pro 13" and it dropped to 20 minutes).

Yeah, I believe the shift may have been when they went to Intel macs. Back in the pre-Intel days your advice is absolutely correct, you must use 1394 Device with the pre-Intel Macs, but on the Intel Macs and beyond, only use USB ever. In fact the newer Panasonic products have done away with the 1394 Device option completely, only offering USB.
 
Got around to testing it... amazing! My 1080i footage now transfers faster than real time! :D


I wonder if I can invoice myself for wasted hours over the years and take it as a tax writeoff?
 
I'm using a macpro early 2008 with USB 2.0 and FireWire 400 and FireWire 800.
I mainly use it booting to windows vista 64 running cs5.
On the Mac side it will be running osx 10.7 lion running final cut pro 7 and cs4.
 
Keep the hours off your camera and get a cheap laptop with PCMCIA slot which will also allow you to dump footage in the field, or just buy an external P2 card reader and use your existing portable computer. Or just buy an external PCMCIA reader..

There are lots of good options out there.
