Hows this for a starter LENS?

The 5DII deserves the best glass you can afford, and then some!
One other thing (Also a note to myself) trying to do things on the cheap usually ends up costing you more then if you'd stumped up in the first place.
This isn't a dig at anybody :), just something I've learned through bitter experiance. :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

true. thats why im not gonna get a gh1 right now.

as for those lenses recommended, I like em, cheap, but rated high. good to get started! {{ yeah, maybe plastic parts, but Im a weekend warrior, not
gonna rent em - lol }

Well its only shooting about 2mp images (or thereabouts) in movie mode

This does not put a sharpness requirement in the same league at stills use 22mp

Donkey lenses should work fine !

Thing you need to look for is smooth focus

Sharper glass can result in more problems with aliasing. However, I use the best glass I can get. It's better to start with good glass and control softness with diffusion.

If I was on a tight budget I would not worry about it though.. You can really spend as much as you like on the lens, everything from $60 to $20,000. Every lens has it's own look.

It's not uncommon for cinematographers to use old, softer glass in favor over new and pin sharp.

Perhaps I'm biased coming from stills background, but heck, buying a 5DII and not getting some lovely 21Mp, photos is a bit of a waste :), and I think, even if you're buying the thing thinking "I'm only gonna shoot movies" sooner or later the stills gremlin will whisper in your ear, then you'll find out how good your lenses are (Which is why I'm buying Leica R in advance!).
Hmmm.....am I turning into a Leica Snob  ?. They're even worse than cine snobs :)
Dave

Um.... StormFactory and Daniel L posted while I was typing.

I'm a Zeiss snob! I have a bunch of low end Sony's with Zeiss lenses.

SAID TO ANYONE THAT WILL LISTEN

" Yes, my Lenses are designed by CARL ZEISS! "{ said with nose in air } :)

I think I may be one of the rare people who bought the 5D MKII ONLY for video. I have never taken a still with it. Why would I, I own the Nikon F75, F100, D80, D300, a Canon SD800is P&S, Canon AE-1 also. I have cameras coming out of my ears, who needs to shoot stills with the 5d MKII although none of my other cameras are FF except the film cameras?

Although I am taking it as my only camera for a Europe project so while I am there, I will snap a few in Paris and Cannes and as we journey from the North to the South. I have seen some really nice stills from the 5D MKII though, I must admit.

WOW thats an impressive collection. have a great trip, and post some footage
for us if you can!

I hear this is a good lens for the price http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/206434-USA/Canon_6469A005_Zoom_Wide_Angle_Telephoto_EF.html
Good range as well.
And its got a rebate for 209 bucks this seems pretty good to me.

What about the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM? It's about twice as much as the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM linked above, and it loses an additional 2/3rds of a stop at the longest focal length compared to that one, but I like the 135mm v. 100 and it also has IS, which the 28-105mm doesn't.

Opinions?

It appears to have no aperture ring. No adapter will allow the lens to communicate with the camera. So you're gonna be screwed as far as aperture control goes. Sorry dude.

You can get adaptors that allow Nikon 'G' lenses (without aperture ring) to be used on a Canon EOS body like the 5DII - that allow you to change aperture.

AFAIK, 16-9.net makes the only adapters that do so. But the adapters are expensive, and the turnaround times for orders are painfully long. Switching to Canon glass would probably be better for someone on a budget. The adapters are really only useful for Nikon G lenses that have no equal in Canon's system.
