Hows this for a starter LENS?

Now with the firmware upgrade no more need to buy Nikon lens for your 5D Mark II.

I think that is the main reason they gave us this upgrade.

It appears to have no aperture ring. No adapter will allow the lens to communicate with the camera. So you're gonna be screwed as far as aperture control goes. Sorry dude.

Stab me in the heart! Kick me while I'm down! Trample my privates
with a Harley! Oh bro.

Thanks for checking anyway.

This was a top rated Nikon zoom for only 230 bucks!

Who can recommend ANY lens in that PRICE RANGE, to get me started!

thanks

G lenses - no aperture ring

you can get g adapters 16-9.net - costly

that price range - canon 50 1.8 or some old used stuff

thanks bro,

but I dont own the camera yet. Trying to save a buck to get started.
You can't mount a Nikon lens without getting an adapter ring so you're going to have to spend money on that.

Go with Canon lenses at this point. They will now take full advantage of what the camera can do without all the workarounds.

I agree with Morgan. Get the 50mm 1.8. Great lens for the money. You can probably pick one up for about $70 bucks or less.

Then rent a few lenses for your local camera shop to see which is worth saving up for.

By the way, you can also check out www.lensrentals.com if you don't have a local shop.

thanks man.

that 1.8 sounds great. I generally trust certain online pro reviewers, and just grab something that looks good. Return it if I was burned.

But I'm sensing that there aren't great economy lenses for this camera, like the Nikon budget lines?

Also, that's a DX lens which means it's not compatible with full frame cameras like the MKII. Besides like ydgmdlu said that lens has no aperture ring. I agree with the other guys, get the 50mm 1.8. Very cheap, very good.

I have the Canon 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 USM. That lens sucks if you plan on making zoom adjustments while shooting. The zoom is nowhere near smooth for zooming video. It is fine for photos and video for non-zoom shots. I'm going to guess the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Autofocus Lens is going to behave the same way. Keep that in mind.

The 5DII deserves the best glass you can afford, and then some!
One other thing (Also a note to myself) trying to do things on the cheap usually ends up costing you more then if you'd stumped up in the first place.
This isn't a dig at anybody :), just something I've learned through bitter experiance. :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

It's a good thing zoom is passe nowadays

Definitely true. These lenses were not made to have their zoom or focus motion put on display. It's the same problem we've been dealing with in the 35mm adapter world.

Possible solutions:

 • Static shots. They're your friend.
 • Hook up a follow-focus ring to your zoom. Assuming you don't need to focus and zoom at the same time. This would really only be helpful if your ff was geared to give you a significantly longer arc.
 • Some situations might benefit from a fake camera push in post (I know, it's blasphemy). I'm thinking of those really slow pushes were you only move in 10% over the course of the shot.
If anybody else has any possible solutions, let us hear them. I would be surprised if someone could consistently get good zooms with their photo lenses.

Hows that 20p working out? anyway to convert to 24?

I may wait and buy the first canon dslr, that HAS FACTORY ISSUED

24p + all manual.

What model you think that will be anyone? when?

thanks
