How would you light this?

How would you light this set and pictures? What type of lights would you use? As you can see the light does not spill a lot from the pictures, so it must be directly above the images.

Thanks for the help.

it looks like a pretty standard 3 point lighting with spot lights pointing down ... it looks like it was done in a studio.. i cant tell if the pictures of MJ are real or done in post tho

It's definitely in a studio. I was wondering what they used to light the pictures. The pictures are lit and there is very little spill or extra light on the background. Is it just a standard Arri light with a narrow beam projection onto the pictures or did they use a dedo or similar spot light? Can this be done with an Arri 650w using the barndoors and narrow spot adjustment?

No telling. There are lots of fixtures one could use for that application; and it's an easy lighting setup. You could just use Fresnels barn door'd and flagged off, though they would not be my first choice. Ellipsoidals would probably be my first choice (Source Fours, regular or juniors would do, including HID versions). You could use Dedolights with projectors, but the output would not be comparable to a Leko. Very easy to create geometrical light pattern with those types of fixtures, with sharp or soft edges, using the internal blades and focusing the lens.

Generally speaking, 'track' lighting is used in galleries where small spot lights are set high, on the ceiling, and shine at a steep angle down on the art work. The spot is such that the circle of illumination covers the art work but not much more.

In the setup given for the shot, it looks like there's some lighting coming from high above, giving the 'pools' of light, but there are also some disturbing lighting on the left/forwardmost image.

The talent is seated in a pool of light with a high 'backlight' (you can see the shadow on the floor coming towards the camera...) as well a high light coming from front of the talent.
