The Avengers movie (2010): who should direct?

As all of you know the Avengers movie is coming and some friends and I were having a discussion about who they think should direct it. Jon Favreau came up, Michael Bay came up, Lois Leterrier said he wants to do it. James Cameron also was mentioned. I have no clue who would be best for such a mammoth production. I am no comic expert but I belive the Avengers they want to do is: Thor, Captian America, The Hulk, and Iron man but I could be wrong. Any Thoughts?

I think Favreau is a good choice. He handled Iron Man well and honestly, I don't think that Iron Man is exactly an easy character to bring to screen. I'd have to see Hulk before I can comment on Leterrier. While Michael Bay is good at making popcorn films, I don't know about this one.

One of the best elements of Marvel Comics' characters is their underlying humanity. While D.C. Comics' Superman is a super powered alien who has a secret identity and Bruce Wayne is just who Batman is when he isn't wearing his mask, Marvel characters are a little deeper. Spider-Man is another bullet point on the list of Peter Parker's problems and responsibilities. He's a guy we can all relate to who just happens to also be a super hero. Iron Man is a personification of the love/fear our nation, and the world, has of technology and military industry. There are subtle nuances to the characters and subtle nuances between the superhero team members which I think should be paid attention to and I don't know if Bay is the guy to do that.

I'll probably get killed for this one but I don't see what's the big deal with Cameron. I mean, I know he's directed some pretty classic movies like Terminator but Titanic for me, was torture (and I actually like quite a few epic romantic dramas.) I mean he did some big stuff back in the 80's and directed a farce that was somehow deemed the greatest movie of all time at some point, probably because that's what people were told it was supposed to be, but his work has never blown me away. That said, I do like the Terminator films and some of his other work, I'm not really sure that he's the go to guy for every big important film.

In summation, *takes a drink of water from the glass on the podium* I'd have to think about it some more but I wouldn't be at all concerned if they said Favreau or even Leterrier or Bay. But Cameron? Then we know it'll be in development until 2021. /End Rant

Didn't they just make that movie a few years ago:

Oh, wait.

I wonder if in 10 years they'll realize how crappy the Star Wars prequels were and try to remake/reboot those as well. Couldn't hurt :) Might be a positive result from all this rebooting madness. Well I take that back--it's yielded good things before. Batman Begins of course. And supposedly Hulk makes up for its predecessor. Maybe you can go home again...

The Avengers from a few years ago I never saw...was it as bad as I imagine it must have been?

Favreau. And after watching Hulk, the only thing Leterrier should be directing is Transporter sequels.

I liked the Hulk. Letterrier is pretty good at the action but I don't think he should do the Avengers. I did not know he was as young as he is, He is only 34. Nolan would be a great choice, did not think of him.

While I liked Incredible Hulk, I don't want Letterier doing Avengers. Favereu is likely the one to put the most sincerest effort into making the movie great, not just spending millions to blow stuff up or stroke his ego. As for what Avengers they are wanting to make, your core group was always Iron Man, Ant Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America. The extended group would add almost any other character in the Marvel universe including Wolverine and Spiderman, but I would like to see Vision, Wasp, and Black Panther in it. Out of all the choices, Black Panther is in the works, as is Ant Man, Thor, and Captain America as their own movies.

I think Edgar wright is dirceting Ant Man last time I saw Info on it. Thor was in $200 million budget hell. I just saw on Comingsoon.net that they want Leonardo Dicaprio for Captain America, and Brad Pitt is second on Marvel's list. I do not Remember Ant Man to well. I think he could shrink and talk to insects if I remember right. Favereu seems to be the most likely choice, but there are quite a few good directors that could pull it off. Uwe Boll would be Awesome!!! (did I say that out loud)

Ant Man is Hank Pym. He married Wasp, became drunk and abusive, and washed out. He then became Giant Man. Mathew Vaughn was supposed to direct Thor, but that fell through. As far as DiCaprio, I think he's too scrawny to play Captain America, but I heard the rumor too. He would be a good pre-serum Steve Rogers though.

What do zombie films have to do with it Capt ?

I totally disagree. (and I'm not referring to low budget crapola)

it is just relentless unoriginal CG fest crap.

Being a kid who grew up reading these comics, it's a middle aged/pre-adolescent dream come to the big screen... in some cases. All they are is a hero story wrapped in spandex and leather. Not too different than Indiana Jones, Tarzan, Lone Ranger, take your pick. The big difference is the quality they are putting into them, as opposed to the stuff they were doing in the 70's.

I can dig that Capt. I personally never got into Superhero comics but I just keep seeing the same films over and over; doesn't matter who the hero is, it's the same story rehashed with a different suit and powers.

I can appreciate the junkieness of of coming to the screen if a fan however. But, man, there's gotta be better projects scripts out there being shelved.
