how to salvage an EX1

dropped an EX1 from about 3 feet off a jib, and according to the repair shop, the printed circuit board needs to be replaced (quoted $1900 just for that part). no insurance on the camera, and with parts and labor, we're looking at $4000 to fix it!

the lens is fine, the sensors are fine, can't believe it's gonna cost this much to fix. camera landed on its back, so it's mostly exterior fixes except for the board. any idea where we could either sell the camera for parts or find a cheaper printed circuit board, cuz $4000 to fix the camera seems insane!

thanks...

Sony parts are always super expensive. Doubt you'll find another board since they all come from Sony. And yes, it's probably not worth repairing since you can buy a used one for maybe $1,500 more. So about all you can do is offer it for parts on eBay or Craigs List. Perhaps some repair shop will pick it up for the lens, lcd viewfinder, etc.
Also, was this a private repair shop, or actual Sony facility? I had Sony / Los Angeles fix mine and they were very reasonable and honest. But there may not be much difference in the estimates. It may be worth checking into.
But, my heart goes out to you!!

If you part it out I may buy the CMOS sensor from you and from other previous posts here you may find a lot more buyers. I dropped mine from 7 feet onto its back a year ago and it just started acting up. Contact me and we may work something out.

Time to switch to DSLR? :)

What would be the point of that? I'm sure if a DSLR was what he needed, he wouldn't have bought the EX1 in the first place. Why give advice that is unfounded?

And a DSLR doesn't do half the stuff a real video or ENG camera does. Can we say Audio inputs just for starters? But lets not open that can of worms on this thread.

Not trying to open any cans, but I feel compelled to say...

Thank you for stating the obvious.
