How to import/ copy DVD into FCP???

So we played at the whiskey A go go the other day and they have an in house video guy who made a great video for us and handed it over straight to DVD-R and i would like to be able to have it copied onto my mac so i can burn multiple DVD's for the band and also so i can cut bit and pieces for youtube and promo stuff.... The only thing is the DVD contains 3 of each of these files...

.IFO
.BUP
.VOB

Now i can import the VOB files into FCP and i can see whats on the DVD but no audio? which must be the .BUP and .IFO files? Do i need a converter for these files? Has anyone done what i want to do? Is ther a program i can rip the DVD onto my comp with?

Thanks guys

I strongly suggest that you get the original footage from the "video guy."

You can extra the video well enough, but it is now heavily compressed, and you will to need to edit it, and then compress again.

Not going to be pretty.

The VOB files must be transcoded into an editing codec for use in FCP.

MPEGStreamclip.

I found a few programs that can extract and convert the files in an uncompressed .AVI so i shouldnt loose quality??? AS for the original files i already tried to get them and they said nope we burn record to HD then give u the DVD? PLus The Whiskey is in LA im back in minneapolis where we live...

Wow, that worked really well. There is a lot of compression artifact (those annoying lines...), but the DVD I had to copy was shot on Super8, real sh*tty DIY transfer to VHS, A/D'ed to DV into iMovie then encoded to iDVD... That is a long hard road for moving images, but of course, the guy paying the bills, "Had to have it". MPEGStreamclip did a great job. I had to import was 34 minutes long, and it took about 15 minutes. I am glad I have an 8 core Mac Pro... that is for sure.

Thanks again David.

Thanks david, downloaded and am currently converting to .mov using the H.264. I dont know if u use this program but being as DVD's are pretty compressed what the best conversion using streamclip to get the best quality?

Thanks again

h.264 is not an editing codec.

Please, look at what codecs are easy set ups in FCP. Use one of those.

You are taking heavily compressed footage from a DVD and compressing it again to another computational intensive codec in h.264.

Use an editing when exporting using MPEG Streamclip, such as pro res or AIC.

Not a delivery codec such as h.264.

OK thanks, thats why i asked because i didnt know which codec was consider an editing one or not? After re-reading that tutorial it does say to use pro-res... Didnt know that was an editing codec. Now i do.

Thanks much!

just to be clear when going through codec's under .mov file format pro res is the same as DV pro NTSC right?

I used AIC and then imported into FCP and it said something about not being optimized for FC blah blah try recapturing footage? I plays fine but i dont know what the warning was about? Should i not be doing .mov i could do mpeg or DV ?

I think i figured it out, the warning said try using media manager to make a copy to make sure the file playback somethin something so i did that and just copied the file into a new project and good to go..

Thanks

well i dont remember the whole message and my G4 i was doing this on just died! so i was going off what i could remember...

Here's how I do it. I take the analog outputs of a DVD player and hook it up to my JVC miniDV deck. Firewire from the DV deck to the computer. Change JVC deck input to "line in" and change FCP capture device to non-controllable device. Open up log and capture in FCP, press play on DVD player and capture DVD. I realize unless you have some sort of DV deck or a miniDV camera with analog to digital pass through this isn't feasible, but just thought I would throw this out there.

How would quality and edit abilities compare to converting to .mov using AIC, then importing into FC

I happen to know bfsound has a DVX-100 and you can use it as a D/A converter.

This question is not black and white, as many factors contribute to the final quality.

I once worked in a facility that used 64 DVD players and PC's with consumer capture cads working up to 12 hours a day. The management thought it looked better then a rip/convert. At the time it was faster and did not suffer from audio drift. Almost noticeable at 45 minutes is awful at 3 hours.

To answer bfsound directly. If a G4 is your only option I recommend getting a DVD player with a high quality D/A convertor and playing into the DVX and capture with FCP (non-controllable device) this will give you great footage with the same workflow you are used to.

Well actually im now working on a G5 dual 2.3 rev b machine. Is the DVX a good convertor or no?
