If you have time do both and learn the process. Then you can decide which is best. In some cases the DVD player can fix timecode breaks and audio drift. Most of the time rip/convert is better.
The quality is fine. It probably looks just as good as watching the DVD on a TV. As far as editing, it makes a standard DV file in MOV container, so the editing is just fine.
