GH2 How to get Canon color?

I love my GH2 but my wife still loves her 5D (original, not mkii). Do you have any suggestions on scene settings we can change to get the GH2's color closer to the 5D?

I suppose you are talking about stills?
Shoot RAW and use Lightroom or Aperture to match the shots.

If you shoot raw, you get the information from the sensor. So apart from using the same iso, shutter and iris, no.

Also, have you considered using canon lens on you GH2? This may help you get a closer feeling.

Again, each camera is different. try to use it for what it really is. If you prefer the 5D, use it.

I'm mainly talking about color, not so much exposure. We do have some Canon lenses which I need to get an adapter for, but the benefit of autofocus is just too great at the moment. We sold our 5D. Might consider getting another Canon cam, was just trying to figure out if someone had a magic scene setting that gets the GH2 closer to Canon color for stills.

I used to have a 5D Mk1 and now have a GH1 instead, to shoot video.

The Canon is so much superior as a stills camera in my opinion. Frame size, detail, latitude, RAW is better too, everything. I miss it like hell for stills!

Ironically, I didn't have a single Canon lens on the 5D - all Zeiss and Minolta and Russian stuff. Now on the Lumix, I have all Canon FD glass!

If you shoot RAW, you should be able to get the colours exactly the same. I agree with the suggestion to use Canon FD glass - I love it!

I have shot in neutral but that did not seem to help me immensely. I have MBS11, so I'm with you on editing in post. HOWEVER, I am getting to the point where I am just way too busy to spend tons of time in post cleaning up shots or playing with Looks, which I love. My goal was simply to get a better scene file, and the eoshd suggestion is something I will have to try. Using nostalgia scares the crap out of me. That sounds like 'shoot with sepia turned on, and edit it using these settings'. I will definitely try it out and do some A/B comparisons!

Thank you all for the feedback. I love my GH2. Used it this morning for some aerial photography and I am thoroughly pleased with the results! Use it every shoot for video but its nice to shoot photos on as well. I am not nearly as critical of it as others are. For straightup photography it is more than competent.

The only drawback to me is that is looks like a dang toy. Maybe I need to buy a broken 5dmk2, carve out the innards, and put my GH2 in it. That would appease all my clients who say "you don't shoot on Canon? I'm shocked!" Yeah, I don't edit on a Mac either.

Yes, step 1 would be to get the Panasonic lenses of the camera if you're using them... they're the most horrendous looking glass I've ever used.

I use the Kipon adapter for my EOS lenses. It works great with primes. There is a little vingetting on zoom lenses when you stop down though.

I dont understand why you bought a GH2 if you wanted "Canon Color"!

Trade it and get a Canon is an easy fix.

I don't want a 5Dmkii or any other Canon product. I'm not a fan. My wife misses the 5d color (original EOS, not mkii, and was wondering if it was possible to get closer to that color). Hence the thread.

I bought a GH2 because of the following:
- No overheating issues
- Superior 1080p 24fps
- AVCHD on SD cards (same workflow as my HMC150)
- great depth of field
- portable
- the price was right

Wanting a scene setting which will give me similar 'Canon color' is very different from wanting an entirely different camera.

I know I can customize my Canon cameras to match JPG outputs to the contrast, sharpness, saturation, and color tone of any still image, by creating a new picture style to upload into the camera. It's very easy to do. The match may be imperfect, and it can get you a big step closer. Maybe Panasonic has a similar tool for GH2?

Just a reminder: how an image looks starts with lighting (including WB settings) and the lens(s) being used (including filters). The final colors don't only depend on the camera body.

Panasonic glass is excellent. I slightly prefer the 20mm to some of my best lenses, including my Nikkor primes.

With reading your situation/opinions, i would just buy a 'cheaper' Canon like a T3i. And definitely keep/use your GH2 for video.
Use the Canon for stills and GH2 for video. Panny glass is very good quality to L glass. I actually like the looks of the Silver (GH2)
better then the MkII.

I tried the settings from the EOS link.. Worked PERFECTLY. Exactly what I was looking for.

I love my GH2. Use the 14-140 and 20mm pancake lenses every day. The scene setting helps me get a good portion of the way there without relying entirely on post.
