How to Gamma?

I'm in the same boat. All I know about gamma selection is that it changes the brightness of the video. I don't know how or why and I don't understand the scientific and technical explanations.

I just leave it on CINELIKE and leave it alone. If someone wrote 'Gamma Curve for Dummies' I'd buy a copy.

Really old article and doesn't cover the newer CINELIKE curves, but check out the bottom diagram on Dan Coplan's gamma page:

http://www.dancoplan.com/articles/dvx_gamma.html

The gamma curve effects how different brightnesses are mapped into the 8-bit DV that goes to tape. It's not intended to make an image brighter or darker, because when you switch curves, you often will change the iris as well. You still need to set the correct exposure, and that may differ depending on the curve. So, while HIGH, LOW, B.PRESS may appear to change the brightness, you can easily change the iris to compensate.

What they are really doing is putting a priority on certain ranges of brightness. B.PRESS for instance, just uses a few bits for the shadow areas (crushing the blacks), saving more bits for more detail in the midtones and highlights. HIGH gamma does the opposite, captures more detailed shadows at the expense of highlights.
