How to eliminate video flicker? Shooting Neon and using fluorescent lights.

Hello!

I've done some shots at 720p 30 fps. My only light source was the light from a 52" LCD. (I'm in the US). On play back I get Horizontal lines or flicker? Is that from the frequency of the light? this is not a LED lit TV, but I guess one with fluorescent tubes?

Also, i had shot some night video of Neon signs in a bar window. I got a similar effect.

Is there a shutter setting, or anything to get clean footage? Or must i stay away from these types of light?

PS: is this caused by the flicker of the lights, or interference from the electronic ballast? It seemed to worsen the closet i got to the light source.

Thank you!

Max

you answered your own question! :-)

ideal shutter would be 1/60 ...plays nice with our 60hz electricity.

Image basics: fluorescent lights produces pulsating light. Frequency in US is 60 Hz and 50Hz in EU. All shutter speeds faster than this values (1/50 and 1/60) produces flickers.

In addition, when there are some lamps of various fluos, this frequency could be double (with 2 fluos) or quadruple (4 fluos), because this lamps alternates between fluos they have.
And more: with fluo light, if you uses high speeds, it could produce color bands cause problems with white balance.
