How to determine footage quality on big screen?

Hello,

I am a Sony Nex-3 user and would like to know how footage from my camera will look blown up on a big (Theatre Size) screen. Anybody ever seen this before? Is there any part of the camera's specifications that will tell me how footage from it will look on a big screen?

Will it maintain the same quality as it does when it's on (1080p 47 inch) TV?

I know these questions are pretty vast, But I would greatly appreciate some feedback.

You can get a beautiful image from an SD cam blown up on a theatre sized screen. It all depends how the original footage was shot and exported. In fact I think it looks better blown up if it's printed to film. Gives it a filmy look, and helps with artifacts.

There's no way to say without testing, preferably on the actual projector that you're planning to use. Bear in mind that the quality of projection can vary wildly between theaters, most especially with independently owned 'mom & pop' theaters. Also, what do you plan to project from? A film print? A digital cinema package? Blu-Ray? that format & how it's prepared will make a big difference, too.

I shot and produced short tribute video for a Health Foundation earlier this year that was shown on a theatre sized screen. The video was shot exclusively on a Sony Nex 3 ( combination of 18-55 and 18-200 lenses) and a Sony VG-10.
While the diffence in the two cameras was noticable in terms of quality, the Nex 3 footage held up extraordinarily well on a 60 plus foot diagonal screen. As long as you're shooting with appropriate lighting, and proper settings for the lighting you have, you will be almost certainly surprised at how nice the video looks from that little camera

yycadm,

Was the footage from a DVD or a Blu-Ray? Did you compress it yourself in FCP or similar?

Thanks,
Daniel

Thanks everyone. That really helps. and I found this:

Extremly helpful. Thanks. Great to know my cam can withstand a big screen.

Daniel,
I did the post processing in Sony Vegas 10 Pro and burnt it to DVD. I've done some stuff with the Nex and burnt to Blueray with no issues. It still comes out looking great
