hey everyone,

this is my situation:

- component out of xh-a1 is used for my and 1st ac's controll lcd
- bnc out is used to give the director a contoll image on his monitor

so now regarding this...
is there a way to capture xh-a1 footage live on set using a mac book? (don't has to be best quality!)

THX! :)

Are you saying that I could shoot in the field, directly to my MacBook running Final Cut Pro, and to the tape at the same time? Do I need the Canon software to do this? or just use Final Cut Pro? This would be just what I am looking for if a director wants to preview the last few takes. I would really like to do this without rewinding my tape OR buying an expensive Firestore kit.

Canon's software is not needed. Just capture right in FCP. Using your macbook is just a glorified "firestore", with more functions of course. Firestore is for the ease (smaller unit).
The tapes you record would then become backups.

Canons Console; quote from LINK
" This program is SWEET! I mean besides the vectorscope and wave monitor it comes with, it does ALL SORTS of stuff:

- Captures DV files in AVI1, AVI2 & MXF type files
- Captures HDV files in MPEG2TS & MPG2ES type files (renames the extension *.mpeg)
- Changes camera modes (vcr or camera or SD card)
- Gives you Time Lapse function (both frame and Sequence) for those peoplke who wanna record a flower grow or sun go down or something. lol
- all custom presents are accessible, uploadable & downloadable.
- IT GIVES YOU TOTAL CONTROL OF ALMSOT EVERYTHING ON YOUR CAMERA!. I mean every single knob and control. AE Shift, Wht Bal, Iris, Shutter, Gain, etc... You can change the frame rate, aspect ratio, start colorbars, set the zoom speed and focus speed and control them both as well!"

That is sweet indeed. I had no idea about shooting directly for FCP. And you could then review earlier clips and takes for the art director without having to rewind the tape??? That would be super!

One note or warning, it requires a lot of disk space (on one HD shoot it captures 30 min in about 30 GB of disk space then stopped with NO warning or notice whatsoever. Since I expected to have lots of space for 1.5 hr I was pretty disgusted with the situation. Fortunately I had tape (except for a scheduled time for a tape change) so all was not lost. Using FCS 1 on a MBP.
