How reliable is the SD card?

heres a question to HMC owners, Id like to ask basedon your experiences if you guys ever had problems with the SDcard medium. Ive had clients being weary of the Card format which i think is ignorance but Id like to see some having bad experiences on both

-the HMC recording and doing something bad to the footages

- the SD cards failing or doing something detrimental

So far Ive had no problems with my HMC, and so far the only troubles i had with the SD card is buying the crappy ones and they're actually not class 6 but only 2 so i had to return it. other than those I've never had an issue on drop outs or corrupted footages.

Ignoring human stupidity, what are the possibilities & factors that could cause you to lose / corrupt the footages on the sd card?

I have never had any issues from my SD cards for the 150, or my compact flash cards for my dslrs.

I think solid state memory is pretty great.

I've read about people having issues but I think if you don't pull out the cards while they're in a read/write state, format in camera and just use basic common sense in how you use it, I think people will be okay with the cards from the major makers.

I tend to stay far away for brands I've never heard of, no matter how low the price.

Ive been the same as HIdef, no issues ever with any SD card. Was worried about transcend due to their inexpense but never had an issue. It seems that Solid state is pretty.....solid heh

I think you have more issues with loosing the cards... not dubbing them over.. and or just having to repair a clip in cam and then not doing it. SD cards have proven themselves in the DSLR world and have in the video world. I've been using them now for a year in video cams and never had a single issue. You also supposedly only need class 4 and above. For a bit extra I'll get the class 6 for offloading times.

For 30 bucks you get something that you'll probably end up using a 1000 times..

Iam having problem with a panasonic class6 16gb. The card is corrupted. The first time it happen, only one little file was corrupt, everyother files was ok. But this time its a 24 minutes interview that is currupted. When iam watching the clip on the camera, the camera give me an error at 17min and ask me to turn off the camera. Fcp freeze at 75%, and I cant copy the file on my computer. Iam returning the card and getting a new one.
I manage to capture the file with the 'logging' feature in the log trasnfert window using the timecode before and after the corrupted data and I lost 3sec of the whole footage. Thats not bad but it suck

That does suck...

One thing I know however is that once a card [any memory for that matter] starts to have bad sectors it's only a small matter of time before the whole thing dies.

That's one reason P2 cost so much because the writing is spread out over many areas and once the controler sees bad sectors it will rewrite to a good sector.

I see. When did you notice this? after the shoot? how old was the sd card?

I guess the SOP would be once a card starts to show a hint of failure, it would be a good idea to replace it immediately.

After the first shoot, I didnt care cuz the clip I lost was not a good take so I just forget about it and didnt think about a bad card or something like that. but sunday morning when I tried to transfert the clip and I realize that It was the same card with the same problem. The thing is that for the first shoot, every other files before and after the one that is corrupt was ok, and the same thing about the interview. The interview is one file of 24minutes. I manage to get everything before and after the currupted part. The camera didnt show me any sign of currupted data/card when I was recording. The card is about 1-2month old and its a genuine panasonic class6 16gb

Thats not cool at all, I guess that just goes to show that it does not matter how much the card costs it can still fail. Missing a piece of your clip sucks but it is still better than a dropout.

So far, no problems with my transcend 16gb
I havent shot anything pas 4min. for professional use though but I doubt it would crash.
I did shoot the moon for twenty minutes and it was a ok.
I had a card read failure but the clips were intact when I played it back from the HMC 150.
Connected my card reader to another port and all is well.
Also havent updated my camera firmware yet as I do not see the need do so.

I doubt you can fix a missing clip in post, a dropout for sure.

Did you try to restore your card with the Panasonic AVCCAM Restorer application?

Before you stick with any brands read the recent thread on "Lost Clip Disaster" for more on the subject.

I've had 3 problems in 2 weeks. My first 2 weeks with the camera.

1. a 16GB Transcend class 6 card. Card completely corrupted and I lost a wedding. A one-time only event completely gone.
2. an 8GB Panasonic class 6 card. Several clips have corrupted frames. Big and small white or black blocks. Luckily, it was an interview and I can probably insert b-roll footage over the bad frames.
3. Centon 32 GB class 6 card. clips play fine in camera. But trying to mount the card in log and transfer gives the following error:
WARNING: "card 1" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.

Yeah, I've got almost zero confidence in this camera. I'm very pissed! Honestly, I wish I could go back in time and buy the HPX170.

Wow, trevor - Maybe you want to consider a problem with your work flow or camera itself.

I have seen the once in a while errors on here, nothing like that.

Where is your transcend from????

At least #3 you can convert with toast or whatever to transcode into prorez/hdv. You may want to try that with #2 also.

#1 you are like me, screwed and I'm sending that one back. Sucks you lost irreplaceable footage...

I hope that wasn't a dig at me. If so, that's pretty rude. I'm not an idiot and I understand how to use cameras, computers, cards, etc. Perhaps I have been statistically unlucky. Or perhaps something is wrong with my camera. I know people have had no problems. That's great for them. That's the way it should be. But it's not great for me. And it makes me a big skeptic. I talked to the guys at panasonic and told them for he next 150, it should have 2 card slots with the option of recording to two cards as a redundancy backup. He said they went back and forth on that with heated debates. Obviously price point won.
