How many video tracks do you use?

hi,

just wondering how many video tracks you guys and gals use on an average avid project.

i have been using final cut for the past couple of years and switched over avid basically just to learn it so that i can be a little more versitile. when i was editing more complicated projects on final cut i would get into using four or five video tracks, maybe more but now on all the tutorials i watch for avid they only use one video track. i know how to add more video tracks in avid but it seems like it's based more on using just one and trimming a lot more. is this true of avid or are my tutorials just not advanced enough?

thanks

If you checkerboard (A roll on video 1, B roll on v2) you'll use more tracks. I put everything onto 1 track in Avid unless I'm stacking graphics, PIPs, or doing compositing.

Because I typically do commercials that are graphic heavy I'll use about 4-10 video tracks per spot. Sometimes I'll use only 2, but I"ll have 50 layers of graphics in After Effects that I render into 1 layer. I do as much as I can in the editor, though, to make changes easier and faster.

For corporate stuff I'll use a couple of tracks--again, mostly graphics above V1. When I worked in news I rarely used more than 2 unless it was a special package for sweeps that needed a lot of shots on the screen at the same time.

Depends on the project. I've been doing a lot of interview stuff shot in the same location with different subjects recently, so I've been using 3 at the least. V1 for interview footage, V2 for a color correction that overlays all the interviews at once, and V3 for B roll.

But once I have picture lock, I usually nest the interview footage into the color correction layer.

Other projects, I will only use 1 track.

There's nothing wrong with using more than one track. It's all about what makes sense to you and your workflow.

I keep all 8 audio tracks filled and usually sport about 6 video tracks, give or take.
AE and Photoshop are usually open.

usually 8 audio tracks and 4-6 video tracks, depending on the project. I do promos for a tv station so we have a lot of supers and other gfx that we have to add on top of the video. but just use as many tracks as you did in FCP there really isn't an advantage/disadvantage that I've found with using any amount.

I often times max out xpress pro with 24 video tracks - thats usually on a music video. but more tracks is the most versatile way to go

Try to keep everything on one aside from titles... I do narrative work, usually the most I'll use is 4 tracks.

note my wacky flip-flopped monitors!
post yer settings. I'm sure we all have very different layouts.
