How long until you can turn 7d back on after shutdown

I can concur on that part of the GH1... and why would any major camcorder consider limiting a major feature over a 5 percent tax. That seems pety and well just BS. There's going to be quit a few instances when shooting over 12 minutes is desired...

5 percent tax. Try more like 17%!

That's what Canon's product manager quoted when quizzed on this subject.

Yes the 12 minute limit is there for FAT32 reasons, but file spanning is missing due to... what? It'd be a nice feature.

To turn off a recording at 29 minutes would be absolute child's play to implement in firmware but again it means doing one firmware for the international model and one for Europe. Do Canon want to put people off the European model by making the international model better specced and help grey market sales? I doubt it.

I think that Tramm Hudson is working on the file spanning for Magic Lantern. Or, at least, it's on his to-do list...

Just to specify...

Is it a true time limit? Does the camera stop recording at 11:59 or 12:00?

Or is it a filesize limitation? Does the camera stop recording when it reaches 3.99GB?

I understand that 4GB ~12 minutes, but I've heard of people recording 13 or 14 minutes of low motion?

I want to make sure I use the proper term when speaking about the issue.

It is a file size limitation but the spanning of files should be technically straight forward to do in the firmware.

Any reason why we can't use a separate PC with an HDMI capture card to catch indefinitely long video segments? How long before the sensor genuinely overheats?

My concern is for documentary-style interviews. An interruption every 12 minutes is intrusive.

Right now, it seems the 7D outputs video while recording at an indeterminable "near HD" resolution.

Have two 7d's for your interviews if they are over 12 min (or cut to b-roll in post), cut to the other cam when you have to hit record again, you'll have double system sound so no big deal there.

At $1699 3 cam's are still cheaper than an hvx was when it came out ($5999).

i've been doing doc style interviews for well over 8 years and have yet to come across an answer that took any where near 12 minutes, hahaha. when i was shooting with my d90 i would stop recording when the interviewee would ask the questions and start recording again as the question was coming to an end. my only concern with the 12 minute record time is for press conferences and weddings.
