How long do you wait? Nikon D--- or Canon MK II

Alright, so I'm at the point where I'm itching to get something that moves me into video with a DSLR. I've been Nikon for some time and have a D200 outfit (couple of lenses, flash, battery grip etc). So, while not heavily invested in nikon, I'd qualify it as significantly invested. But that MK II calls my name and so far and Nikon doesn't have an equivalent. But there are rumors...

So is anyone else in my predicament? I'm considering unloading all of my Nikon gear and moving over to the MK II. But I feel like the moment I do (or shortly thereafter), Nikon's going to announce some ridiculous video DSLR that I'm going to want, and will thus kick myself for having just unloaded all of my gear. I've already emailed Nikon. They gave me the canned "we can't discuss future products" email in response. So what's the play here? The Canon provides immediate satisfaction in that I get to start shooting right away vs just talking about shooting. But it comes at a steep cost (unloading gear, buying a whole new rig). But who knows how long I'm going to have to wait on Nikon to come out with a competitor. I feel stuck. Anyone in the same position, and if so, what are your thoughts?

Yea Im in the same boat.
I got the D90 to pass the time until the next one.
I recently bought a 50mm f1.4g so im all in at this stage.
Just getting a little impatient.
The main thing keeping me waiting is the d300s speculation.
plus 30p of the canon isnt very appealing for me here in Europe.

nikon are making an announcement later this month around the 24th/25th from memory. My best guess is the D300s/D400.

Yep, the situation with nikon is really a bit misty at the moment. There are some rumors about an announcement at the end of july/beginning august this year. I´m impatient too, but gonna wait these 4 weeks. If nothing happens then i´ll buy a pana gh1, but keep my D90 and all the lenses and other stuff of nikon. The gh1 will only be an interims solution, lets say for about 6-12 months. Afterwards nikon will offer a d300s, d400, d700s, d800................... or whatever. And one of these new toys will fill me with desire to turn back to nikon - with an excellent video mode, full manual control, fantastic codec with a high bitrate......................... etc :-)

Edit: But don´t forget => between the date of announcement of a new camera until it hits the sales floor 3 or 4 months could elapse.

Ha, I see I'm not alone. I wasn't aware of the upcoming announcement. Maybe I'll give it until then. But if they don't pull through, I may have to go Canon. But oh how I love my Nikon gear. Decisions decisions.

The press conference is supposedly July 30th and August 4th. The rumor is that one of the announcements will be for the entry level D4000 and the other will be for a D300s. We will see.

I'm going to w8 it out with my D90. If a D300s is offered that doesn't give longer recording times and manual control (and at least some of the other goodies everyone seems to want), I'll think hard about juimping ship. If a D90s is offered that solves some of the D90's problems and there is no firmware upgrades made available for my D90, then I'll likely jump ship based on principles...and I probably won't be back.

Seems to be a pretty big boat we are joining ;-)
I´m definitely waiting for the anouncement end of july,
but don´t expect to much forward-stepping in terms of video. Manual controls is one thing, the wobbling of the D90 is another.
Good time for writing stories and - for still photography.
The D90 is amazing for that. Even with all the AIS lenses, without any metering (pain i t a) it´s great.

But twice a week I find myself almost hitting the checkout button in an onlinephotostore, a 5d II in my busket.

Patience, patience

I'm getting impatient with Nikon...I'm waiting for now though since I can't afford the 5D and jump to full-frame.

I think it will take Nikon another year to come out with something. If you need something before then you could pick up a gh1 for not that much to hold you over until Nikon gets their act together and releases somthing worth talking about.

Honestly for me, the next step is a red one with a nikon mount. I'm tired of all the problems with every single camera. I just want something that I can shoot 2:35.1 at 24p and have it look good at 1080p and 720p. All these cameras that cant provide a large sensor and a decent HDMI or HD-SDI out are driving me crazy. GH1 has the cpu issue, the mk2 cant shoot 24p, and the D90 is just rediculous that it has not gotten a firmware update with even manual controls. Scarlet will never arrive, so might as well do a lease on a red one and sell some of the other cameras I have lying around.

i tend to agree, but for me the form factor, for portability and stealth, and the cheap price is what makes the slr's interesting. if you want to take great digital pictures with 35mm dof i think the red one is the way to go.

Ok so end of this month? I'm looking to make my entry in quest fest into a feature, and hope to shoot on something better than my D90. If need be, i will shoot on my d90 but it'd be great if something out there would top it. Ideally a cam that shoots high frame rates like the gh1. Looks like it wont be any of these cams judging from the specs on nikonrumors.

We know your pain. I, like many here, was an early adopter to the D90. I think it speaks more about an aesthetic choice than a technical one; ergonomics, menus, button layout, etc. That said, every day I drift from this forum to the 5D MkII's and with all bias aside, can appreciate what both cameras have to offer.

I'm waiting until Canon acknowledges the efforts of the Magic Lantern group and gives the market a firmware that brings their design into the professional video stream. The manual control is a good sign but it's available only for the top end of the product line. What's next? They're obviously responding to how filmmakers are conforming the camera to work as a capture device, and Third party accessory makers are responding as well. I'll wait until the 5D MkIII or rent a MkII in the meantime.

I love the D90 for stills and will treat it as such. The video I make is incidental at best for the moment. The 5D shows great promise, along with the GH-1, K-7 and E-P1. Either way, DSLR video is here and will only improve. A years time will even out all the wrinkles from the upstarts debut.
If you feel pressed, the 5D will give you good video now, not later.

...but alas at an unusable frame rate for those working with film or in europe. All i need in a camera is out there, just not in the same body at the same time. :-)

The canon 5d camera is a good one i'm sure but it cost 3 times the price of the d5000 from nikon....

I hope that if nikon comes with a firmware update for the d90 it will be also for the d5000 hehe.

Nikon should release a manual control for the d90 and not the d5000 to distinguish them :Drogar-Thinking(DBG
