How good?

I was wondering how good is the Canon XA10? A guy I know is going to shoot a feature film on it and figures he will have it play in the theaters and sell the dvd's on Amazon. I don't know anything about the camera but he said the rental is pretty cheap.

Depends on how much filming experience or more to the point, how good he is.

But unfortunately, saying he's going to do all that with a rented XA10, doesn't say much for him, his script, budget or anything else.

Cheers.

I have the XA10 and really like it. Sure the touch screen is not ideal, but does work. Small! Very small camera. I had 2 XH-A1 before. I would say the XA10 is a little better picture quality, much better in low light, not even close there. It is hard to compare the two since I never had both cameras at the same time. I also have Panny AC130, which is much closer to the A1 as far as form factor. To me the AC130 look more like "video" where the xA1- and A1 look more like film to me.

I think he is living in a dream world. He is casting about 50 people in his film with no budget and I'm sure these people are thinking it is going to be a big production and when they arrive they will be a little let down. Here is the facts: He has never shot with a video camera before even though I have told him for the past year he need to do some filming to learn what it is all about, he has never edited a film but thinks he can do it pretty easy with a $250 software, he has a lot of visual effects in the film and he is going to use that same software and the best part of it all is he is starting to cast in about another week and filming will start a few days after casting is finished and a few weeks later he will have his feature film done and by November it will be on the big screen and DVD sales with tons of media coverage pounding on his door about his great film. I told him that it took me seven weeks to shoot a film and a year to edit it and before that it took me about a year to do casting and location scouting and my film isn't even ready for any kind of release. He is going to do all that: Casting, Filming, Editing and release in a month time? Either I'm really slow or he is really fast. I told him that I have over 20 films under my belt and I'm still learning and will be taking a class next month with Canon to learn about the 5d mkiii and that is costing me about $2k.

New_Zealand your friend is an fu*** idiot or genius?. How can anybody be so confindent without any experience at all... But these times when everybody want to be an *ARTIST* anything can happen... Tell me more about this 2000$ CLASS just to learn something about 5d mk3, sounds interesting...

Hey damlaanp I think I would lean towards being an idiot for him LOL The class is being held in Burbank CA on October 27/28 on the canon camera. It's costing me more then others due to the travel etc.... the class itself is around $700. I know the price goes up closer to the time. It is only covering the Canon 5d mkii and mkiii. If you want more info drop me a pm and I will forward you the link to their website.
