How Far will YOU go

I am moving to Burbank next Christmas, hope to work professionally as a camera assistant on studio features, music videos, and episodic tv.

I'd love to see a larger audience moved by a film I've directed.

Not so much because of their ticket price, but because of the communication and shared emotion.

I'd like to make movies that push people beyond the boundaries of their everyday perception. To take them places, they've never been before...

But, in the end , if I fail... it's OK, Life is a miracle...

karapetkov pretty much summarized my life goals in his post above. Now, THAT would be success to me.

I aspire to be Joe Schlep Cable guy. Wait a minute... I am Joe Schlep Cable guy! Woo Hoo! Dreams do come true! :cheesy:

My goal is to be a Cinematographer, for Hollywood movies :)

Possible? I'm not sure...But it's my dream, so I have a chance...

man i just want to shoot Music Videos, Films, commercials, and corporate spots....

its basically what i do now so im happy.

I think it's as much (or more) about WHY you want to do something as it is about WHAT you are willing to do. If you understand your motivations, decisions become easier. I'm glad that was part of the initial question.

Like most of you, I make movies because I love it. I sorta fell into it, just when I needed it most. My wife and I do it together, which is great, since with 2 little kids it's a lot easier to rationalize going to a "screening" than going to the "movies", or going to NAB than a "vacation"

My motivations and goals have changed. I want to create enough commercial success to free my wife from her slave wage job. At the same time I want to continue to increase my skill set as a writer, director and editor. Honestly, if I could make my living at this and be proud of the movies I make, that would be enough. Even if it means the same lifestyle I have now. I've spent the past 3 years assembling a solid team around me and the relationships now go beyond the professional. An excellent bonus.

But I too want my movies to affect people. I do crave that feeling when other people get what you are trying to say. No feeling in the world like it.

Along this journey we have found that there are many people who can benefit from our skills and experience. We spend a fair amount of our professional time creating video content for non-profit and publicly funded organizations that benefit the special needs community. And I have to say that most of what I thought I wanted (fame, fortune, relaxing evenings shooting the breeze with Francis, Marty, Steven and Walter Murch) are eclipsed by the feeling I get when the director of a non-profit tells me that a video I made helped them raise enough money to eexpand a much needed program for toddlers with special needs.

But I have to add that to get where you want to go (wherever that is) you are required to do things that you do not want to do. Things that are outside of your comfort zone. There is no negotiating the price of success, whatever you determine that to be.

learn to pul focus in your sleep, while filling out a camera report, while someone is yelling at you to hurry up, in 100 degree weather while you have a leg cramp. Thats the life of a good 1st. :) I been there.... its a real test.

I'd like an illusive Oscar one day.
I have no aspirations to make a movie for a studio tho. Gonna do it my way.
I won't be moving to Hollywood. Location has nothing to do with my dreams.

Lately, I've been really trying to zero in on what I want to do, and I think what attracts me most ultimately is TV writing. Of course, there is a lot of junk to wade through, but I am very attracted to being able to write characters over a long period. You get to explore much much greater depth and complexity than in a film, where time is obviously limited.

Like everything else I choose to do in life, i do it because it is so fun. If it wasnt this fun i wouldnt be doing it.

I'm growing more and more intrigued with writing too.

I guess I'm in a major minority here. What I really want to do is act. And, fame isn't necessary. All I've ever done is theater. And I love it.

I think I got into film because its like a not so distant cousin to theater. And, there is more creative control providing you write it, direct it, film it etc. Plus, I thought I'd write stuff for me. So, I went to film school and slowly began buying sh*t. And, discovered that writing is sucky hard. FRIG. But I went BACK to grad school and let life sorta get in the way and got busy...the past couple of years I've become more of a film gear collector than a doer! I've got 2 DVX's collecting dust.

Hopefully that will change by entering the LOVEFEST. Which is what this thread seems to be...a freaking LOVEFEST. Mark...Timur...get a room.:cheesy:

Yeah, i'm working on it. All I do right now is AC, read every book I find, talk to every AC I know, practice, work on shoots, go to school, repeat.

Though, I am much more interested in starting out as a camera trainee or loader than trying to get in the door as a 1st...That would be foolish. Just being there in any entry level position is part of my goal, because the whole process is a part of what makes the job and experience worth it! Climbing the ladder is half the fun.

Lately I've been into grip & lighting on shoots. So if any of you New York guys are looking for someone to order around, PM me! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) Hey we all can't be directors...there's plenty of other jobs to fill!

In all honesty I could care less about being "famous" but I hope that my films will be famous.

I just want my films to reach a wide audience. I have quite a long time to reach that goal.
