how does sdhc class system work?

thank you kind sir. i'm editing two projects due today and trying to buy this for a gig in jamaica on wed. so i need it delivered quickly and i want to buy the right stuff.

on paper this system looks killer...class 6 16gb (2 hours) for $37???

as it turns out that card won't work. you need a 300x card and that's only 150x. i thought the class 6 was the magic thing to look for. help?

the price jumps a lot when you go up to the higher speed...to $273.95 for 32gb, $47 for 8bg...no 16gb avail.

Class 6 should most definitely work. You don't even need Class 6 for an HMC150; the highest-quality modes only require Class 4.

thanks Barry. I might order from new egg and simply return the B&H ones.

what about in the 32gb drives? do you think the speed is necessary with that size? the guy at b&h was certain that you had to have class 6 300x even tho the package that they sold me includes a class 6 150x.

thanks everybody for all this great info. you're a great resource.

how certain of the class 4 thing? have you used one? I would love to get 3 of those rather than one of the class 6 300x. The big thing right now is being able to record 3 hour clips...in reading the panasonic paperwork they say that if you use too slow of a card you could lose your data if the file is corrupted.

i see you're in nc...so am i. if you ever need an experienced shooter with a matching camera i'm here. i have a lot of neat trix as well including a 12' jib, tons of lights, lots of experience and a great attitude...did i mention lots of experience?

sure and for $108 you can get a class 6 32gb...why not? I guess for that matter the one b&h sold me will dump footage even faster yet since it's 300x rather than the 150x.

Panasonic says you need Class 4. They don't mention anything about 150x or 300x or any of that, they say you need Class 2 for HE and HG modes, and Class 4 for HA and PH modes.

And yes, class 6 will offload a lot faster to your hard disk than class 4 will.

The class signifies how many megabytes per second the card will sustain minimum (so long as the card is not badly fragmented). This is important since video devices need to sustain a constant bitrate. I'm not sure if the "x" ratings have any consistency, but they typically are referring to a card's burst rate. This is really only usefull for photography.

i dont understand barry, if the cam record at 24mbps, how could i use a sdhc that record only at 15mbps? like scandisk class 6... the class 10 record at 30mbps, but cost too much...
