How does Hollywood make (UHD) Blu-rays?

DVD Architect does not re encode if it is given fully compliant files . Files from Vegas or EDIUS will work fine. It will of course need to encode any menus created and format for BLuray iso. I like it because one gets to author once and then feed the appropriate file for DVD or Bluray. Creation of iso on my Threadripper takes about 30 mins for a 2 hour Bluray so it certainly is not re encoding. Equivalent for the DVD is seconds. I do not let DVDA burn use Nero most of the time.

I have not tried, but DVDFAB has a UHD authoring application. https://www.dvdfab.cn/uhd-creator.htm?trackid=headmenu2,headmenu2

Pretty sure I saw an option for "burn Blu-ray disk" in Vegas proper, but never tried this. Again, my version 11 is very old, was still part of the Sony Creative Software group and this feature could have been omitted on later versions as well. Surprised to hear that Magix discontinued DVDA, that's disappointing. But the important feature of Blu-ray like DVD, is chapter skips. Except for DRM on commercial disks, there really is no other compelling reasons for optical media at this time. Blu-ray does offer a pathway for some to see playback on their flatscreen tvs where they don't have a flash drive or external media playback capability, and I guess there are a few still like that. In my studio I have an 8K HDR display connected to a tower pc with 3090 video card. It is a really convenient way to stream or playback anything, or edit/grade in Resolve, and all-in one center for A/V mastering with 7.1 surround as well. But I think streaming has taken over for optical disk, probably permanently.

I'm working n a 20th anniversary reissue/remaster of my first feature film. We're going to be doing some updated interviews with the cast and crew. One of the things I still like about disc media is the ability to package all of that up with a custom menu and have all of that be on one physical disc, which can nicely sit on a shelf easily discoverable for decades to come.

I don't know of another way to do that outside DVD/Blu-ray. Without having separate files. Even if you put separate files on a flash drive, you're still missing the presentation of a custom menu and such. I'm really surprised there isn't a video file format that acts like a disc in that way.

I've never used it but know a couple of people who have used it for DVD and say it works okay. Remember this is purely hearsay on my part. No experience with it whatsoever. https://www.newcyberian.com/dvd-on-usb.html

EDIT:

Well, blow me down! I tried it and it works. It uses a portable version of VLC Player. It does also include an .EXE file to run the whole thing. Something some PC anti-viruses may block, maybe???

This was my post from Jan 2009 on Doom9 forum:

"I authored a small BDMV project with Sony DVD Architect, then used AVCHD-Patcher to make it AVCHD compliant. Lastly, I used AVCHD-me to make it compliant with the 8.3/Fat32 conventions, copied it to a USB flash drive in the AVCHD root folder as described, stuck it in the PS3 and wha-lah...It plays with full menu functionality."

So it looks like what was going on here, was that you still needed a Blu-ray disk player with a USB input, i.e. the PS3 from 2009, and the disk player would see the flash drive as Blu-ray disk.

Smaller Blu-ray projects could be burned on regular DVD-r or DVD+r media. I also burned quite a few disks for HD-DVD. Those were pioneering times.

Hey I know this topic has been dead for a while, but I'm currently looking for something better than DVD architect to make DVD's Blu Rays, and hopefully UHD blu rays. I do a lot of play recordings and like 1/2 of the orders are still for disks. Currently with DVDA I can only author DVD's and HD BR disks. Is there anything besides Scenarist (which I don't make enough off of these to afford) that I can use to author UHD BR as well with menus? Or is that just a pipe dream?

I still produce DVDs for theater but many years ago I decided to only provide HD on usb flash drives or digital download. It was too time consuming and difficult to author Blu-Ray and I didn't get enough orders to justify it.

Streaming services killed Blu-Ray. I don't think there is a large enough market for software companies to want to build authoring software. The industry wanted to discourage consumers from burning Blu-Rays.
