7D How do you think ML RAW will affect future canon cameras?

As a 5dmk2 owner, im actually quite interested in what the 7dmk2 may have to offer. i have no need to stick with FF, and it's more than likely the newer cameras will outperform the now older FF one.

But it is a curious thing, seeing how ML RAW has really allowed cameras to do things they were not supposed to be able to do.

Do you think canon will put the foot down and lock up future cameras? Do you think the blind eye will remain turned?

or perhaps they will try and offer some advancements otherwise.... http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/01/...utter-for-2-5k-video-on-an-upcoming-dslr-cr1/

I would be surprised if Canon did anything considering their cinema line of cameras. It seems to me that Canon really hasn't done much in last the few years when it comes to video on their DSLRs. Just their new autofocus system on the 70D. Which is really more of a consumer feature overall. Even if some pros find a use for it.

Now if they included ProRes 4:2:2 10 bit recording in camera, that would be a killer feature. I would also love to see them increase dynamic range to above 12 stops and add global shutter. But these are all pipe dreams.

I don't think they'll do much either, other than providing a lower moire/aliasing image like the 5D MK3. Anything too good would hurt the C100 sales.

There is no reason to think they will ever do anything with anymore Canon cameras.

I mean, the ML guys won't touch the 1DX or 1DC because they are afraid of Canon suing them or whatever.

its a bit of a grey area. once you buy something, it's your property, and you can do whatever you want with it, like hack it. the only thing they can do is void the warranty.

the part where lawyers can do something about it, is when it's distributed. which is still a grey area as long as you don't charge for it.

that's at least my understanding of personal and intellectual property. legal or not, it's certainly not a good idea to piss off a large corporation.

Canon may improve some video features of a new DSLR, but I doubt they'll improve all of them to the point where it outguns a C100 for a fraction of the cost. Maybe it'll get 2.5k avchd, but then there won't be a headphone jack. Then again you never know…the 5Dii was able to give the full frame look that prior to that cost six figures to achieve.

Raw has a great obstacle on recent Canon DSLR Cameras is Pink dots a pattern caused by the recent focusing system, like T4i, T5i, SL1, 70D, and probably all future models. Fixing is far from perfect.

My uninformed prediction:
* they will ignore ML
* they will keep on releasing consumer-oriented DSLRs (read: H.264 with same DR as today's models; concentrate on improving things like AF instead of IQ)
* they will try to convince pro shooters to buy >$10K cameras (C300 successor with 10-bit 422, but probably no DR improvements yet)
* the result will be: wannabes like me, which made most of the Canon video DSLR market three years ago, will switch to something else (right now: mostly Blackmagic, with Panasonic Nikon and Sony as minority alternatives), well-budgeted productions ($100K and above) will happily shoot with >$10K cameras from Canon, Sony, etc

The only thing I could see changing this scenario is: if Canon brings a new generation of DSLRs with better DR for stills and doesn't lock ML out, then shooting RAW video with them may be an option for slow-workflow users (read: shorts, not weddings). The DR improvement must happen at some point in time (stills users have been crying for it for at least 3 or 4 years, and that's about the time you need to design a sensor). Think of a D800 shooting full-frame RAW video with 14.3 stops of DR. Nikon could do it with a firmware release, but doesn't seem interested. The camera could be hacked, but that is a slow and uncertain process. I'm starting to think the Canon DR update can't be too far away already, and it may be the next big step forward.

seriously doubt it, way too early, nothing supports that yet! (maybe as an option? a lot of effort -it requires new processor- for a speclist catchphrase)
