How do you pronounce...?

Maybe others have pronunciation questions like I do. Some industry terms are pronounced more than one way. Others I read but never hear, so I don't know if I have it right.

Anyway, I can't remember them all at the moment but I'll try a few and I hope others will list terms they are unsure about and others will help us all out with the correct way of saying things.

Lavalier or lav. Is it "lah" as in law or "la" as in lab?

Arri. Is it "air - e" like we breath or "are - e" like the word are?

Manfrotto. for the first o is it "frah toe" like the o in froth or "fro toe" like the o in throw?

Is diffusion gel or crap on the lens "smutz" like putz or "schmutz" like schmuck (also spelled shmuck)?

Okay, this is a little start. Everyone welcome.

Manfrotto should be pronounced exactly as written according to Italian rules - MAN like "mon" in "monitor", FROT like "boat", TO like "toe". But I've often heard a good ol' Americna "man- fro-do".

The crap on the lens is schmutz, and it rhymes with "foots" (NOT with putz or schmuck).

I'm not sure what people in the industry say for sure... but "lav" like "lab" seems most common in the U.S.

Arri? ARRIn't ya glad I didn't say banana?

My favorite is FRESNEL lens.

It's named after the dude that discovered the properties, a French guy named Augustin-Jean Fresnel - pronounced fray-NELL.

But thankfully it is also accepted to say "FREZ-null"

I dont want to say anything French unless absolutely necessary.

(Audio pronunciations from Merriam-Webster.)

Is Brevis with a strong e (kinda like Beavis), or a softer sound (Breh-vis)
What about Letus? Leet-us, or Let-us (like the veggie)

It's weird ... I never heard any of these pronounced, I only read them.

I dont know for sure about the above two, but I say BREE-viss and LET-us. With their product, the Letus Flip, I say "let us flip". And people look at me like I'm crazy.

Like Zaphod Beeblebrox. Everyone looked at me nuts when I always said ZAY-fodd and they said "ZAH-fidd". Pishhhaw! I had the last laugh. "ZAH-fidd".... please.

NY-con..... NIH-core

Although I have heard that in Japan it is KNEE-con.

And, of course, I still say "NY-core" even though I know better.

I also say "Ver-SAYCE", but that's just because I'm an Elizabeth Berkely fan.

NI-con (strong i) ... I just said "Nikkor" out loud. I don't think that's a good brand name. Racist company if you ask me.

its hard as i live in Japan but i grew up listening to Paul Simon... Kodachrome anyone? For Nikon i'll accept both :D
but Japanese people will have no clue what you're talking about if you say "NAI-CON" instead of "KNEE-CON".
