FS7: how do you edit your FS7 footage?

just curious on what FS7 users are using to edit their footie? what kind of machine and any issues they may have, do the files play nice with premiere and after effects?

Thanks fellas

5k iMac, FCPX+Colorado Finale, Resolve, Fusion job's a good 'un for 4K XAVC-I.

Color Finale not Colorado Finale!!!! That's a bizarre auto correction.

I use EditReady to transcode to ProRes, it also has an option to delete unused audio clips. Its freaking fast and allows you to change any number of metadata.

Editing in a lesser compressed codec makes everything much faster + i also use Raid0 drives.

Windows 10, Premiere Pro CC, Resolve

i7 5930k @4ghz, 64gb ram, GTX 980 Ti, 4x 4gb RAID 0 for online editing of 4K XAVC-I. NEC UHD monitor.

Cuts through footage like butter :-)

external raid?

Footage is backed up onto SAN but individual projects are pulled down onto 1 TB SSDs. Each machine has a Thunderbay Raid enclosure in JBOD mode and we move SSDs on the sleds around to fit the projects we're working on.

A single SSD is plenty fast enough for 4K XAVC-I and as yet we've not needed to think about a RAID for editing.

Adobe CC 2015 on Asus rampage extreme V with watercooled I7 5960X @ 4.14Ghz + gtx TitanX +64GO DDR4 (8x8) Kingston (KHX3000C15D4/8GX) RAM.
1TO SSD for win10, 2TO SSD for rushes.

Not a PC person but FS7 material is pretty widely accepted, especially ProRes.
As one poster observed, EditReady is your friend and is perhaps the best $50 investment for a workflow app you'll buy. It will transcode most any codec to DNxHD or ProRes and do so while you are downloading your card to a drive or directly to your laptop.
I have found that Premier, FCP and Avid have no issues handling the material.

Fast PC, intel i7 etc. Davinci currently in xavc-i. After a bit of testing with DXnHQ no difference in speed so far.

Hesitating to turn PC into dual boot Hackingtosh to be able to use and export Prores. (Because of all those creatives who have their believe and faith in macs) :-)

only warning about mac machines is that for FCP X you won't benefit from a card like GTX that has a lot of GPU power. Strangely FCP X doesn't make use of it so if you want powerful editing on a mac you need to look at AMD based cards - not nvidia. (nvidia will work of course, it's just that FCPX is heavily optimised to use the AMD architecture.)

I didn't know about this until recently but this its REALLY worth knowing for those die hard FCP X users. You might be better off editing in Davinci Resolve or Premiere.

Not all GPUs are created equal. The rather lowly AMD 7950 could out perform an nVidia Titan in certain tasks and it could do so drawing less power which made them the go to card for FCPX. Even the mobile GPU in the iMac can compete with desktop GPUs in the old Mac Pros.

In the 3D world Apple has been lamentable in fully implementing OpenCL which has limped along with missing features and compiler bugs which has seen nVidia cards and CUDA become the de facto standard for GPU based rendering. So it's a case of horses for courses, if we move from VRay to Octane for rendering we'll replace the Mac Pros with custom built PCs filled with nVidia cards and divide 2D and 3D work between Mac and PC respectively.

It's really important to remain impartial and use the hardware that best suits your software and workflow.

Yes agreed.

An old AMD card can outperform a lot of 9xx series nvidia cards and possibly even Titan cards which sell for over $1000 bucks.

For FCPX The guys on hackintosh forums swear by the older AMD 270x and 280x cards. On a very similar build a guy with 2x 280x cards had about twice the performance speed in FCPX as I did with my GTX 960 SC 4GB nvidia card. The 280x is what a three year old card?

But the issue with 280x cards are their power draw. I think this guy was sporting 1400w power supply

Regardless, I don't use FCPX all that much for editing. I'm more of a Davinci or Premiere guy.
