How can I do this?

Basically wanna create an intro for this full video I'm doing and need this intro I came up with. I'm pretty sure its achieveable but I'm not sure of how to go about tasking it.

I basically wanna have an image of a map then it'll like zoom down and pan across to a certain area on the map and then a little like drawing pin comes in and sorta like stabs onto that area.

possible?

Not fully following you here, but it sounds like you need an image of the map, make it a 3D layer, dolly in, and bring a pin to the end destination. Correct?

sorta like, a map of the UK then zooming and panning to just the London area then zooming and panning to one certain area again and putting a drawing pin object onto that area.

(had to google "drawing pin")

How well do you know AE?

File, Import (map.jpg & pin.jpg). Drag map to new comp button. Activate 3D layer switch ("box" box).
Layer, New, Camera. Ok.
Layer, New, Null Object.
Parent Camera to Null.
Make Null 3D layer (active 3D layer switch).
Select Null Layer. Hold "alt" (option). Press P. Press R. Click the stopwatches.
Drag VTR to the end of the timeline (where you want it to end).
Move the Null object in your active camera to it's final position for the camera.
Drag pin.jpg into timeline.
Make 3d layer.
Animate it the same as the null.
Select all keyframes and press F9 (or right click, keyframe assistant, easy ease).

That's a rough and dirty way of doing it, but it's a starting point.

If you are thinking about a 3-D 'height map', where there are hills and valleys... that does not come 'naturally' to After Effects. If you are thinking about a 'flat' map, and a pin image sticking somewhat perpendicular to the 'map', then you can do that with the 'pastboard' 3-D that AE has.

You'd have to make your map and pushpin 3-D objects, then orient the two images so that they appear to be perpendicular to each other from the camera POV, then key frame the camera motion, and zoom in from some distant start point.

If you want a 3-D hills and valley look, you'd have to do that in a modeling program. Or there seems to be a possible way to synchronize between Photoshop's primitive 3-d capabilities and AE. But Photoshop would be acting as the 3-D render engine, and the resulting image sequence could then be imported into AE for further work.

I've not done the latter, but a while ago someone wanted to do some 'real(tm)' 3-D stuff in AE, that required them to really go to a 3-D program, or use a 'curvature' filter that AE has as a plugin.

No, I'm not wanting a 3-D map as such. It'll literally just be a 2-D Image of a map then the POV will pan like down and round to a certain point zoomed in on the map and a drawing pin will come in and stab that point on the map. It's mainly just 2-D images with camera movement and objects coming in
