How bad is it to keep using the camera after the red x is seen?

So my DVX has about 37 hours on it and I just got the dreaded red x. I bought the camera used, it had 7 hours on it.

Have a few questions

Is it normal to have that red x at 37 hrs? I was under the assumption that I'd have to clean them much later on.

After I turned it off and then on again, the x seemed to dissapear. I recorded for a while afterward (a few mins) and it seemed to be gone. How bad is it to keep shooting, if the x doesnt return. should I still get the heads cleaned?

And also do you think it's likely that the person selling the camera somehow reset the hour meter?

Anyhow, thanks for any advice you can give me.

Andrew

Your camera is trashed, it's worthless. Send it to me immediatly and I'll dispose of it for you.

cool. Thanks guys. I guess I'll just run a tape cleaner through there. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that at 37 hours.

I had that happen at 7 or 8 hours. I was shooting in a bar and I guess it didn't like the smoke. I don't shoot in bars anymore.

I'm having the same problem as well (Only my DVX is at 107hrs) But the dirty head icon only comes up every once in a while. I've only had one or two episodes where the screen went blue or jagged horizontal lines slide across the screen from one shot to the next. I guess I could just work around it and keep video taping, and ignore the little "red X" whenever it comes up, but I know I'll have to get it serviced sooner or later. (I live 4 hours from Panasonic Canada's office.)
Looks like both of us need our DVX's looked after.

Hey right on man. I'm in the T. I think I'm pretty close to Pan can's offices too. Im assuming they're in Missusagua. I think I might try the cleaning tape. And if it persists then I'll clean it manually.

I got my camera used as well with 13 hours on it. At 36 hours it needed a head cleaning. Looks like you're right on time to me.

just a quick question, is it bad to use other brand cleaning tapes cuz ive heard its bad to use other brand tapes.

Hey all. I've always been told by video industry professionals that one should never use those consumer cleaning tapes on DV cams. I was told that while still using my 1CCD camera, so I would imagine it applies even more to something like the DVX. I was told that one should always have the heads professionally cleaned, because those consumer tapes do more damage than help. Any other words of advice/experiences?

i herd the same thing. the last time i used one of those damn consumer head cleaners it screwed up my video head. Your supposed to only run it for a few seconds. well i did and it screwed it up anyway. I ended up having to pay to replace the heads. I wouldn't chance it.
also, most people know this but i had a tech tell me that once you use one brand of tapes never change brands. i know that it has something to do with wet and dry tapes. however, he said to be on the safe side stick with one brand of tapes.
