hey guys i was wondering if i could get some feed back on what you use to import footage from your hvx200a. im currently using a fire wire and importing it into adobe onlocation cs5 but i find that i have to lett all clips play. any suggestions please

Finder copy to the desktop, and import into Final Cut Pro using Log and Transfer.

Mount write protected card using USB.

- mount card via camera connected by usb OR panasonic single slot USB reader
- create new folder on desktop or external drive (use no spaces or special characters in folder naming)
- open P2 card
- select all
- drag and drop CONTENTS and LASTCLIP.txt to the new folder

from then on. its however your NLE of choice tells you to injest

Similar to others:

- Mount card with PCD2 via USB
- Create folder on MBP internal drive: Project_Name_Date / P2A
- Drag and Drop Lastclip.txt file
- P2CMS (with verify) export to folder
- drag and drop to External Raid as backup
- I use Raylight so FinalCut can 'natively' read the mxf files.

jason, im curious. what is the benefit of the raylight involvement? is it just to save space by FCP not creating quicktime duplicates?

Yes that is one benefit. I have redundancy in my workflow without needing create duplicate files by re-wraping the MXF files into QTs.

The other is eliminating the ingest time. Log and transfer of P2 media is fast but when you add up the time on long form shoots, it can really become unruly. The day I bought it, I saved about 3 hours of ingest time on a project that had a lot of footage needed a quick turn around time. Raylight takes mili-seconds to create a .mxf.mov pointer file. These pointer files play natively in FCP and Quicktime (easily preview shots in QT or FCP, rather than P2CMS).

There are other useful features that occasionally come in handy - removal of 1080pA duplicate frames, creating "P2" cards from any quicktime video (can use the camera to play HD files), even editing P2 files natively in FCP directly from the card.

I would rather that FCP plays well with P2 than use Raylight but I have found it to be another tool to increase efficiency in my workflow from capture to output.

groovy.

wnabm3,

I've found FireWire and USB to be fairly slow compared to other options.

For offloading P2 footage, I use a laptop with faster a connection-- either an Express Slot or a PCMCIA slot. With either of these, your offload time will be much faster. With Express, you'll need an adapter to plug in your P2 card. With PCMCIA, your P2 card will fit right in just like an SD card would fit into an SD card reader. I also use an application called ShotPut Pro which auto-transfers my footage to a connected FireWire800 hard drive. It's a great workflow I think, with less "user error" than creating folders by hand.

Happy offloading,
Andrew

well, i'm NEW to the HVX and am wondering....i bought the P2 single card USB port, but when i put in my P2 card, it splits it all up ... audio/clip/video, etc. My question, and sorry if it's idiotic, how to i import video clips? FYI, Windows 7, Sony Vegas Pro. HVX200a. I also get the pop up from windows, to copy video, pictures, etc, but it only ends up putting a picture of my clip on the computer.

Thanks all, i'm sure it's much easier than i'm making it.....
