How are you going to use your HVX?

My company will be shooting primarily in DVCPRO HD. Majority will be documentary, ENG work, interviews, shorts and commercial production.

However, Im getting pitched more and more regarding feature length films. Since storage seems to be an issue during the early stages, would shooting in DVCPRO 50/24p then upconverting in post be a better storage alternative than carrying around a laptop. Ill wait until firestore-4 comes out and P2 prices drop..

Underwater documentary. Tropical coral reefs and open sea. Specialized on sharks and rays.

Two 8 GB cards in the very beginning are enough for 1 dive as I dive the same spots several times (up to over 100 times for the same spot). I'll get used to the camera with cassette until I get the UW-housing and just before the next trip at that time. As I guess a little price drop for the camera within the first 2 months, I'm gonna wait at least these 2 months...

I spend a lot a time teaching ninjas to tip toe better and would like to get this on HD, but they are ninjas so sometimes they disappear before you can turn the camera on them. Seriously I have some action and drama features I'd like to shoot and a horror film maybe.

First thing I want to get shot is a feature development project. Likely 720p both 24p and overcranked for a number of scenes. Then straight to film out for a test. Depending upon how it comes out, then perhaps the feature, if not on the HVX then likely on the 800 or 900.

cheap blue ray DVD discs.

Blue ray disc's have problems with skipping. Look at Sony for that one. I do appreciate the suggestion's. As far as any idea's that we may have, our R&D and engineering departments are gathering information at this time.

i have to do a lot of green screen shooting on location. the sd dvcpro50 in a light weight form factor seems like a great solution. hvx to laptop is my plan. hope it works.

i do commercials but fantasize about a feature.

I'm shooting a sci-fi/thriller this winter. I'll be ahead of the Firestore by a couple months so I'm going to have to rent a few P2 cards or step up to the plate and purchase. Offloading the P2's periodically doesn't really worry me since it's no different then shooting film which is what I'm used to (although not lately).

I'm excited to see what can be done stylistically with this camera in the Sci-fi realm. Should be a great test.

You can use the HVX's exclusive loop record feature to handle that. ;-)

(Actually in all seriousness, that's a HUGE benefit of the HVX that most people seem to forget about...)

Yeah that camera will roll 20 minutes of 720p HD and start recording backwards when you hit the record button. What an incredible feature, like the DVR attached to the cable box, that is constantly recording live TV as you watch it.

Andrew, let me know what you may come up with, and if it an affordable solution, we may be able to help sell it for you as dealers. It seems like right now, most solutions cost about $0.90/GB, as in Lacie's 500GB drive for $395, so getting that price lower will sure be a boon. :)

well, it doesn´t need to be lacie. any "cheap" harddisk will do.

i see no other solution now than a RAID-1 disksetup in which you exchange disks.
there should also be a way to shrink the DVCPro-HD files (like zipping them).

IF I decide to buy an HVX200 (I change my mind about cameras about as often as I change my mind about girlfriends--in other words, literally every other minute), I will be shooting primarily in 720p/DVCPRO50. I will only be shooting dramatic shorts/features. I have a native-16:9 Sony HC1000 3CCD camera, which I LOVE 'cause it's so small, for vacation videos and whatnot, and a beat up old VX2000 I use as a deck and BTS camera.

For those of you that will run into storage issues, what would you like to see as a solution?
I would like to see a removable-HDD, Firestore-type device; HOWEVER, one that mounts more closely to the camera body, perhaps, like a BeachTek XLR adapter box does, or how a traditional brick hangs off the back of a camera body. With the camera's small size, an efficient, aggregate (camera+HDD contraption) form factor becomes even more critical when using the camera on a fast-moving set with tons of different set-ups and mounts (e.g., high-hat, dolly, Steadicam, handheld bracket, etc.), and when using the camera in tight spaces (e.g., car interiors).

The current "on-the-top-of-the-camera" mounting location employed by other Firestore devices wouldn't hold up one day, the way I treat a camera on a zero-budget set.

That sounds like a great idea. Maybe a drive housing with a removable core, like ones that mount in the 5.25" drive bays, that way the drives are cheap and swappable, but the housing is very sturdy.

Most people who bought these from me mount them on their belt in a pouch or attached to the tripod in a lightmeter's hard-sided leather holster. I don't know anybody that mounts them on top like the picture shows. It looks too precarious anyhow.

It'd be kinda cool to just have a tall metal cheese plate under the camera to serve as a housing for the FS-4, so you can just place it in there while shooting.
