FS7: How about this sony 18-110 lens

Its just some BS washed out look that is trendy these days..probably started by some idiot director looking at a LOG monitor and too afraid to say it looks like shite..cos they have no idea what LOG means .. and thinks a LUT is a lady of easy virtue in a bar in Belarus ..
!! Exactly !!

There's BTS! The slog look is obviously the house style...

I think making this video might've been the closest they fellas have been to the female kind.

This Fujinon 18-55 demo video looks like it's made by filmstudents right?

Lighting in many scenes is just over done and then there's the loose framing on many shots. This doesn't do the lens demo any good.

observations about the sony 18-110

observations about the sony 18-110

I took some opinions from this thread and this is the final verdict: :-)

The Sony 18-110mm zoom is:
  1. An extremely boring lens.
  2. It appears to have the same soulless nature and complete lack of character that Sony seems to do so well with their lenses.
  3. Some people dont give a monkeys about charts.
  4. You can't really tell if a lens is sharp just by looking at the images on a computer screen
  5. Sharpness is a perceptual thing, not something that you evaluate with charts.
  6. Cheap Nikkor primes, the Nikkors render a much more pleasing image
  7. It feels like a "coverage" lens.
  8. You can't mount the 18-110 on a Ursa Mini
  9. Don't go between two fighting dogs, you will be bitten.
  10. Zoom is phenomenal since it can be detached from servo for manual zoom.
  11. Servo zoom is much smoother and more sensitive in servo mode.
  12. Clearly visible distortion especially barrel at wide but also light cushion at 110.
  13. It handles wonderfully.
  14. Optically, it seems better than the 18-105mm.
  15. Focus lagging is nonexistent and it has a really nice long focus throw compared to stills lenses.
  16. AF isn't terrible, but I haven't tried it on my A6500 since it's in the shop.
  17. Servo zoom is smooth and not nearly as slow as the 28-135.
  18. f/4 sucks a little at the price point, but it's a tradeoff.
  19. good weight, feels well balanced on FS7 + XDCA + Zacuto VCT plate
  20. servo isn't as fast as ENG glass, but about what I'd expect for S35 budget lens
  21. There isn't noticeable lag in the fly-by-wire manual focus, but it also doesn't feel fine tuned. At first I assumed it was a mechanical connection due to hard stops, but there's just something about the lack of kinetic response that made realize it was fly-by-wire. Canon 24-105 & 18-80 feel "right". I could get used to it at this price point.
  22. There IS noticeable lag when adjusting the iris.
  23. Everyone knows that. Any other revelations?

Congratulations, and don't worry, retirement doesn't change your triple A status, replacing the A from (self-appointed) 'Artist' with 'Ass**** ' fits you even better.

Is it boring because it's a do it all donkey f4 lens?

I'm not sure I could write it off as soulless or intrinsically boring, without really putting it to the test myself.

I'm not excited by the proposition of buying any do it all lens, but that's probably because I don't expect any of this new crop of lenses will be optically better than my dull but worthy 24-105.

On the other hand, I've seen beautiful stills and video from the 24-105. Lucky light? Beautiful subjects?

Please. Someone hurry up and buy this damn thing and then give us a rational opinion.

Enjoying the convo in the meantime. Retiring in your 40s and then chucking in opinions from the side. Seems a bit FU to me. C'mon Nirv. What's the Story?

Ben.

Im so bored of hearing about this lens.. re the less boring Fujinon 18-55 video.. yes not a very good lens test vid.. a couple of Korean hipsters... bash lights into a white room .. and look to never pan or tilt let along move the camera.. having seen Korean TV, no surprises with the lighting.. hopefully neither is actually a DP.. and they just broke into the studio to impress out of work Russian model.. albeit hampered by lack of global shutter Fs5..

Can I get triple AAA rating !..
