FS7: How about this sony 18-110 lens

Anyone bought this lens ?

Only reviews are from september 2016 IBC Amsterdam. Since then nothing heard of it.

I think I found the sixth reason why the Blackmagic Ursa is better than the FS7:Drogar-Happy(DBG):

I think I found the sixth reason why the Blackmagic Ursa is better than the FS7:Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Reason Number Six: you can't mount the 18-110 on it

There have been a few threads here that discussed the 18-110. I've had it on my FS7 II as I got one of the first batches of the kit.

Servo zoom can be completely disconnected so manual zoom is possible. Manual focus does not have servo lag. Very sharp. Can't say too much about CA in the lens since the FS7 II is correcting CA. I think it is a great successor to the 28-135.

I don't make "this camera is better than that camera" comparisons. They are all professional products and have strengths and weaknesses. It is a question of what works better for you. I own an FS7, FS7 II, Ursa Mini 4.6K a Sony a6500 and a bunch of GoPros. It's just picking the right tool for the job.

Ned

You own it?

To me the question is manual focus - either it is wrong or not.

I can't explain in terms of low end zoom feel - the z1 was ok, the ex1 nearly ok and the 18-250 sony slr lenses unusable

got a note from my dealer last week:

but unfortunately it will take some days until I can shoot again.

OMG... what happened sir,.. ! sound recordist wallet fell on your thumb ..

OT
I did what I preached my kids never to do: I was so stupid to go between two fighting dogs and got bitten.
One tendon was cut and had to be fixed. Seven stiches and a splint for 6 weeks.
So for you dog owners. Don't do that. You better go to the vet than for a surgery.

Ouch... Speedy recovery mate.

Hi Ned,
Thanks.
I didn't find the 18-110 threads. And the comparison with the Ursa was to stimulate response. It worked!

How is the zoom function, smooth? And how does the autofocus work?

I now have the 18-105 lens which has a terrible, very very terrible, bad, distortion in 4K. I suppose the new one hasn't?

Zoom is phenomenal since it can be detached from servo for manual zoom. Servo zoom is much smoother and more sensitive in servo mode.

I really haven't bothered with autofocus. It is supposed to be better than the 28-135 and, as for comparisons with the 18-105, well comparing a $600 lens with a $3500 lens there are naturally major differneces. I just don't think the autofocus on the FS7/II is great to begin with. Hopefully the next generation of APS-C cameras will see some of the autofocus features from cameras like the a6500.

Ned , Have you found the f4 limitation to be much of a problem in practice?
I would have jumped at a larger lens that was faster.

I have yet to try it on my a6500. Every time I decide to try it, something else seems to come up. It is on my list.

I wish it were faster than f/4. The FS7 II is sensitive enough that it hasn't exactly posed a problem but I wish that I had that extra stop not just for light but for more shallow depth of field. It is a trade off. The 18-110 as an f/2.8 would be maybe double the weight and at least double the price. Of course I was unaware of the Fujinon when I bought the FS7 II plus lens but I still would have opted for the 18-110 for the servo zoom and greater range. The Zeiss 21-100 is very tempting but I am hesitant to invest 10K.

I'll report on its autofocus with the a6500 when I get a chance.

I am in the same boat as Ned. The Zeiss is tempting but expensive and for me as mostly single OP the image stabilization is more helpful than the last 5% of the Zeiss factor. 55mm of the Fuji is too short at the long range. I had the 16-70z as a less-than-ideal solution and I missed already a longer range. I learned to live with f4 on the allround lens. For shallow depth of field or fast aperture I use one of the zeiss contax primes. Can't wait for the DHL guy on Wednesday :-)

push autofocus is also a nice advantage of Sony 18-110

I am with Ned...18-110 as a all around lense. But what about the picture quality of 18-110 ? I miss direct comparison to MK 18-55 out there.

Is only f4 in outdoor situations a problem (exept depth of field) ?

it arrived today.
1st thing I noticed immediately is a clearly visible distortion especially barrel at wide but also light cushion at 110. Okay from 30 - 80 I would say.
I don't think it will matter for what I use it but for a lens in that price range I would not expect that. Lens corrections does not work in 4K :-( Monitor LUT doesn't work with activated lens correction.
Focus, zoom and aperture ring is super smooth. AF works too, smooth and quite precise. F4 seems sharp at the first sight.

edit:
I saw distortion at the Fuji 18-55 also. Cinema5D says it's a weak point of the Fuji. The Sony doesn't shine either

Any observations on sharpness as compared to your typical 24-70 (Canon, Tamron, etc) ?
Wondering if this might be a better option and ditching my 24-70!
