How About Them Apples?

The pre-record buffer needs to exist on the camera. The amount of time we could make available in a memory buffer on the Odyssey would be insignificant.

Mitch,

Would love to see Convergent release a smaller Odyssey. The 7Q+ is a remarkable tool, but too big for much of my handheld work.

Hey Mitch, a month or so ago I recall you saying that we'd be hearing about DNxHD this summer, any word?

So how does the Shogun do it? 8secs in hd and 2 secs in 4k (granted they can't do the slow mo you can). The combo is what I need for a shoot coming up. Even just 2 seconds would do the job. Enough time to press the trigger.

I'm guessing a RAM memory buffer. Essentially, if you need to store data at a rate faster than SSD card media can write, you have to use a memory buffer. That memory buffer needs to be above and beyond the memory buffers available to regular system operations. Frequently it's separate entirely. That's a hardware item that needs to exist on either camera or recorder. It would appear the Odyssey doesn't have dedicated hardware for such an operation. So in this instance the Shogun may be what you need.

I don't recall saying that (not denying it, just don't recall), but if I had to guess at such a word it would likely be "Fall".

That's not "Fail" it's "Fall".

In theory we could possibly do a pre-record buffer and we are looking into the possibility. But please understand that such a buffer simply holds a pile of frames. The higher the resolution the fewer frames. The faster the frame rate the shorter the time because the number of frames does not change, just how quickly they are filled up. A 2K240p pre-record buffer would likely give under a second of realtime recording, so not much use as a buffer. That's at the same capacity that the competition offers. For it to be worthwhile we would have to have a much larger buffer, and that would consume a LOT of resources within the Odyssey very quickly. And this is not even considering the fact that we are talking about high speed data rates here. Much more so than traditional shooting speeds, high frame rates would require the use of certain types of memory to keep up with the deluge of information.

Pre-record has not been ruled out, but don't consider it a practical thing for high speed.
