"Houston, We've Had a Problem"

I have been provided on a USB hardrive a copy of the video files .mxf in a folder

I am working with Final Cut Pro 6

I have tried importing the files into FCP but we get the error 'files not recognised' wrong format. We have tried both 'Log and Capture' as well as just pulling the files into FCP.

After studying a P2 card we where provided with we see that each .mxf file has a .xml file asscociated with it. We thought these may be pointer files for FCP to see the .mxf files.

Question how do we (if at all possible) pull the .mxf files into FCP.

The guys who shot the film where a little nieve unfortunately and spent alot on equipment hire, we hope that we can salvage something!

hope someone can help

cheers

robert.

Whatever you do, don't touch the files on the USB drive, work with copies.

Your problem may be as simple as a clip spanning or renaming issue. I would try P2 Log to see if it can pinpoint and correct the problem.

I have just tried P2 Log
I dragged an .mxf file off the USB drive and put on the P2 card
I then ran P2 Log repair and it generated a .xml file in the 'CLIP' folder however when I then tried the the 'Log and Capture' in FCP the .mxf file was not seen.

Back to square 1 I think, anybody with any suggestions?

Your folder structure should look like this:

Folder Name: Usually NONAME in caps.

Inside that folder are a LASTCLIP.txt file AND

a CONTENTS folder.

In the CONTENTS folder are SIX additional folders:

AUDIO
CLIP
ICON
PROXY
VIDEO
VOICE

Is that what you were provided?

Finally, these files ARE NOT IMPORTED into FCP 6. Nor is there LOG AND CAPTURE.

There is a LOG AND TRANSFER.

Are you using that?

Ugh I hope you have the whole contents folder cos if there's just a VIDEO folder and .mxf files, you're not going to have any audio to sync

LASTCLIP.TXT isn't so critical. Edius doesn't need it for instance, and FCP doesn't either anymore. Even if you have a program that does need it, the file is is easily created using a text editor.

thanks for everyone getting involved-

I tried barry Greens sugestion and downloaded Raylight and after some tweaking managed to get the video files back in FCP - wow what a relief that we can see something, only trouble is we can't hear anything, at the moment I have put the audio files within the contents folder and tried pulling the clips info FCP but when a clip is played there is no audio available.
Checking in the browser bin it confirms no audio with the video (usually 4 channels).

mmmmmm.......... not sure about this one yet.

robert.

The audio files are in the CONTENTS: AUDIO folder in the first sub directory on the hard drive as the manual from Raylight states.

I have contacted DVfilm makers of 'Raylight' so am waiting on their reply.

apolgies David

and yes all the relevent folders have been created and the media files that I have been using have been dragged into the the VIDEO and AUDIO sub folders so all in place there.

I have been told by the Raylight makers that I need to to change the file names of the audio files for them to be recognised and brought into FCP 6 by Raylight I will test out this theory after I have completed a basic timeline edit as its a pain in the ass to bring in all of them as we have so much footage.

But Raylight works extemely well and if you are in a pickle like we were, it was the only solution.

I work with FCP 6.0.1 and the latest Raylight.

I don't change the name of anything to import first video and then the associated audio file.

Something else is occcurring.

I believe the files came from an FS100 without the "Organize P2" option.

That's right the files were pulled off a firestore but the guy didn't know what he was doing and failed to include any of the folders so all he put onto the the supplied USB drive was the audio files and video files. literally just the .mxf files - sreagley enough these are in lower case (.mxf) and not upper case (.MXF) that are seen on the P2.

i' ve had this problem to. The problem was solved when i put the footage back in the original capture scratch location. Maybe look for an answer there, by (re-)setting your scratch disk for that project.
