AC160 Houston... we may have a distance meter problem

After months of suspecting I have a problem with my AG-AC160A, I finally made some careful measurements.

Here below is a comparison of measured distances to an object (black and white bulls-eye) compared to the distance reported by the camera.

Conclusion: My camera overstates distance by as much as 5 meters, the variance is non-linear.

test conditions:
red focus assist
daylight wb
Z86 (full zoom)
Iris 4.8
ND 1/4
0 db
spot meter ON
measurement device: surveyor's 200 ft tape measure

Camera Actual Diff
25 m 25 m 0
23 m 21 m +2
21 m 17 m +4
18 m 13 m +5
12 m 09 m +3
5.8 m 05 m +1

I used to have a laser mounted on the camera so that I could get the camera set up for stage events (3 measures - front stage, mid stage and back stage), I figured this would be a good way to quickly make adjustments as the actors would consolidate at various parts of the stage. My distance from the front the stage was typically 53 feet, but in some venues 100 ft.

I stopped using the laser after I discovered that the in-camera distance meter was off.

I suppose some of you might say, why care about the distance, just use peaking.

I wonder if anyone would care to repeat this test, if you find the distance meter to be accurate, then I will need to take the camera in for warranty service.

hi Walter, just you and me here I reckon! I will do these tests for you when I get a moment. (and warmer-we still have some frost here in NZ!)
However I have just looked up the DOF on a calculator and using your average setting of 21 metres @f4.8 and max zoom of 86mm It shows a depth of field of 6.35 metres on a 1/3 chip camera. (18.3 to 24.6) . So let the focus snap in on your nearest required point and you will have about 20 feet of DOF beyond. Pretty deep! that's the payoff with small chip cameras. I will update you when I have done some tests with my 160A.
Cheers!

Thanks, Rod.

It will be interesting to see if your readings track mine (overstating distance, peak in the discrepancy at about 13 meters). I repeated the test and found exactly the same results.
