1DC: Hot off the presses! Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens for Canon EF Mount

You would rather buy this than one of the established Cine Lenses from Zeiss or Canon?

What are you expecting from it? What is your reasoning?

I too have the same question. Why not buy the Canon cine 50mm at 4700? (includes a discount of 250 usd till Jan).

I pre-ordered one with the cine conversion from Duclos.

Supposedly rivaling Master Prime quality, 240 degree rotation.

With Nikon mount I can put it on my Epic, C100 or D800.

Sold.

"What are you expecting from it? What is your reasoning?"

The best solo shooter combination ever.

When you hold a 1d c up to your eye and
realize that you are shooting with the best stills camera in the world with superb FF, 4k (of which you can pull stills) or S35 video, all through what is essentially a fast master prime, that soon will be joined by a wide and short tele, and, with all three lenses only weiging about 10lbs...well...what in the world is not to like?

To me this is an unbeatable combination.

Add a lightweight Gitzo with a decent light fluid head (which one?), some filters and a handful of cf cards, a decent mic, an ice light or 2....20lbs covering 90% of what I want to shoot.

All in a carry on. No checked baggage. No looking like a film crew.

"That guy taking photos? His camera looks kind of heavy, hasn't he heard of an iPhone?"

By the time it is all put together about the cost of an f55 body.

And then, for me, to get the other 10% or when working with a crew? It is called renting.

Hi, we were writing at the same time, so I hadn't read your latest post when writing mine below:
--------------------------------

I have followed the development of the lens, so I'm familiar with it on a theoretical level.

It's certainly going to be excellent. I am sure it was exciting for the Zeiss engineers to not have to factor in price when coming up with the design. It is also a beautiful piece of gear and perhaps its saving grace will be that it will hold its value well.

For all its excellence, I still expect the optical advantages that this lens has over best-of-breed traditional lenses on current full format cameras to be minute.

But hey—while the mechanics of the Canon Cine Primes are great, there's room for optical improvement when wide open, that's for sure.

Yes, this is a great, beautiful lens, but even in 4k with its 7 micron photo sites and 1.3x crop the 1Dc isn't that demanding. And since it's a manual focus lens we can't use the lovely AF of the 1Dc either.

I'm not at all critical in my questioning, but rather curious what the reasoning was.

Heh, I took it as curiosity, It actually let me put together my reasoning.

I have been lurking and asking questions on these boards for a bit while I was deciding which direction I am headed. I am basically building a future in 4k. I feel the best way in is the 1d c.

I have never been much of a stills shooter as I spent a life time in Broadcast studios. But, with this camera I am hooked, and now I have time to pursue "moments" as well as "actions".

I have a small collection zeiss c/y primes that though demanding to use are very satisfying.

I do have Canon stabilized and telephotos.

But, there is something about the classic 3 prime set that is seductive and challenging.

Auto focus, automation, automaton, I have become a cyborg along with everybody else,

I held the 55, she basically whispered- I have stories to tell

It was like meeting Scheherazade.

OMG the canon 50mm has purple edge on everything when its wide open, this is the fact.

and you are paying 4K, 3 times the price of 50MM canon to get a F1.4 without purple edge and blureness.

I am sold, But I do not have money lol.

I believe only pixel peeps and perfectionists(rich guys) and hobbyest care this. I am not. Im sticking with my 50mm 1.2
