Horror Trailer DVX100b 24P

I just thought with everyone making horror movies for horrorfest right now that it would be. But since you put a trailer up and we're not supposed to show footage from our movies, I was confused. When I commented, I actually forgot I wasn't in the horrorfest thread. Sorry. I do like creepy masks though, particularly when there partly obscured, like through the window.

Overall, I liked it. The framing on the second shot seemed a little off, and in some places the fog looked out of place.

I saw that you said you shot in 24p and edited in a 24p timeline. If you shot 24p normal, then you should be editing in a standard 29.97 timeline. If you shot it in 24p advanced, then you should be using a 23.98 timeline.

There are two pull downs, which allow us to record 24p. The first is 24p normal. The 24p normal pull down is 2:3:2:3. The reason for this pull down is because in order for us to get 24 frames to fit into 60 interlaced fields we need every 4 set of frames to fit into 10 fields. The pull down works by having the first frame printed to two video fields, and the second frame printed to 3 video fields. The pattern then repeats itself, so every 2 frames get written to 5 video fields. So for every 4 frames your getting 10 fields. This process happens 6 times per second, which leaves you with 60 fields. Because of this pull down you end up with 2 split frames and 3 full frames. So for example, if you have four frames
A B C D your first two frames will look like this: aa bb. But your third and fourth frames will be a combination of two fields, so they will look like this: bc cd. And then your last frame will be a full frame and will look like this: dd. So you can think of the pull down as taking 4 frames and making it into 5 frames. So you have 5 frames, which is equivalent to 10 fields of video. So 10 multiplied by 6 equals 60 fields. Since all of this fits into 60 interlaced fields, you’re able to edit it using a standard 29.97 timeline in your Non Linear Editor.

The second pull down is known as the advanced pull down and records using a pull down of 2:3:3:2. Essentially, this pull down does everything as the normal pull down does to record to tape. However the difference is that because of the pattern it leaves only 1 split frame and 4 full frames. So since the process occurs 6 times a second, you are left with 24 full frames. Using your NLE while you are importing this footage you are able to remove the split frames leaving you with a full 24 frames for every second. So because of that you are able to edit using a 23.98 timeline.

Here are two links which explain 24p very well.

I hope this all helps.

Lol thats pretty good for such a short piece of work. I didnt like the skull mask much. I thought he looked wierd enough. Perhaps though in the trailer you could have kept him more of a dark figure then hit us with the wierd face closer to the end with a bit of a flash not let us see it so long to realise its a wierd mask.

Overall did look a tad videoish... lighting was sometimes good, other times ok.

What I liked the most is the color timing, I thought it suited the mood etc very well.

As you said it was for fun, done in 6 hours. Nice!

yep, not working here, i just get a picture of .. i dunno what its called, pretty sure that new nebula is called Verxis.
